funny smell of my first rotary oil change

I have an 88 gtu that i got in oct. of 2004 had to put a motor in it
put a good used 74000 mil motor out of a 89 rx7
i have put aprox 2500 miles on it sense i put it in . changed the oil tonight and it smelled kinda rusty/gasey and thin . my question is is this norm for these motors ? is this why the oil gets changed a 2000 miles and not 3000.
I had 35psi oil at idle and aprox 70 at 3000 rpm. the car runs great gets about 19.5 mpg

Sounds about right oil pressure wise and yeah...its normal. Should smell like theres a bit of gas mixed in with the oil.

totally normal, its called engine 'blowby' thats why all cars rotary and piston alike have crankcase ventilation with PCV recirculation systems for emissions reasons.

Actually on a Non turbo using a good quality oil, as long as you have not flooded it, you should be able to go 5000 miles between oil changes with no issues.

2000 mile oil changes on a non turbo is a waste of money (unless again it has been flooded, in which case the oil should be changed ASAP).

My oil change timer is the "quart up" point.

Wayne, hurry up & put another 20-30k on your car so you can get wear measurements!

Hehe I have no CCV system... probably should set something up. I have to oil change at max 1000miles lol. Basically I change the oil when it thins out enough for the pressure to be low on a cold morning. With oil in good condition when you first start up it should be pushing about 60-70 PSI, and take a few minutes before it will drop down.

If you are concerned instead of doing the sniff and taste test send it to an oil analysis lab and they will tell you how the oil is holding up and whether you can extend your oil change intervals.

Fuel dilution is a common problem with rotaries and the RX8 is no exception.
