fumes in the cabin?

ok...i bought my rex a yr ago for 200 dollars with no gaurantees that it would run. well it did run, but ive had some problems lately so its been parked in the garage and ran once in awhile. it pulls great, the engine seems real strong. ive put a new clutch in...but thats about it. but anyways my problem is this:

when the car is running, the cab is filled with god-awful fumes...so bad it makes your eyes water sometimes. its really not that bad when the windows are down...but it just kind of makes you wonder that something could be wrong. i dont have the plastic radio surround piece...so i thought that was the problem. but a friend of mine doesnt have his radio surround....and theres no fumes in his cabin my lower shift boot isnt in that great of condition.....could that be the problem? or is it something wrong with my fuel system (i.e: injectors/pump/etc) any help would be much appreciated! thx guys

check your pulsation damper it is probably leaking my car used to smell a lot like gas and then I checked the pulsation damper and it was badly leaking fuel.

yep,
fumes can come in through the shifter boot (you should be able to feel the hot air)

but it may also be coming through holes in the floor, etc etc.

check.

Check the boot that seals the engine bay from the cabin around the wiring harness (passenger side firewall). Also pull up your shift boot and see if the rubber boots are worn, theres two or three I believe.

got the same problem, but a little diff.

my problem is, that when i put a crack in the windows all i can smell is exhaust fumes....... bad it burns my eyes like there is no tomorrow. but if i roll my windows all the way down, or put the top down, no fumes at all. it also only happens while i am moving no matter what the speed (15+ mph)

-Shawn ( i think my exhaust manifold is leaking. anyone can conferm this?)

on the coupes its the seal around the rear hatch that goes bad and sucks in fumes from the outside. Lower pressure inside than outside. any crack or vent will cause this, especially if the vent is towards the center or rear of the vehicle. That's why the air vents come from the front of the vehicle. I need to plug up my spare tire compartment drain hoe, replace the rear hatch, and the shifter surround/seal boots.

who and were are hatch seals sold???
ive got the same problem as rx7 driver, but i dont have a vert
the wierd thing is when i have the fan on full blast (to keep out the fumes) and have the recirculation button on the fumes still come in a little bit, espcially under heavy acceleration, but if i dont have the recirculation button on, i cant smell the fumes..........omg this is freaking confusing

if you have the recirculation off, your car is pulling air from outside to inside giving you a positive air pressure in your car which would keep out fumes that were leaking in through cracked seals. with the recirculation on, your car isn't pressurized at all and the fumes can still leak in most likely. as for seals you might also try Victoria British. i think they sell seals to doors/hatch/and other stuffs as well as lots of other rx7 parts.

ok well a few things i know...the rear plug for the spare tire is missing...and i have no spare. i also know that the inner boots for the tranny are shot...i remember that from when i pulled the transmission. so this for sure is the problem? or is the pulsation dampener a possibility? thx for all the replies guys...

Pulsation damper leaks fuel. If that was bad, you would smell gas and your car will catch on fire. Your problem is related to exhaust fumes. I know because I had an FC with no cats. Get somekind of plug for the spare tire compartment and check the rear hatch seals. Also visit the junkyard regularly for those inner shifter boots. That should fix the problem.
