Fuel sock
I did a search and found a dirty sock can cause problems but I could not find a method of removal for cleaning out, it's full of junk, so much so that gas did not run out of it when I pulled the fuel pump assembly out of the tank today.. So how do I remove it for cleaning?
Thanks,
Mike

Remove the pump from the car. Look at the pump and the hose on it. Undo the top clamp on that hose.
Now shove the pump upwards as far as it will go. Now you have a large gap b/t the bottom of the pump and the black rubber and bottom of the housing.
Now pull the pump outboard of the bottom of the pump and pull the pump out. The rest is common sense, as in pull the filter off the bottom of the pump and instal the new one. On the original pump there is a small keeper that you'll have to pry off to remove the filter.
Reinstall the pump. NOW would be a good time to put a fuel pressure gauge on the output hard line of the pump and see how much pressure it's putting out. Compare it with the FSM readings. Like 80psi give or take some.

Actually I figured it out, but thanks, Hailers. Are these still available? Wouldn't mind a new one, I flushed the sock out with hot soapy water. Yes, good idea, I'll check the fuel pressure when I re-install it. That remnds me the fuel gauge, if I remember the level dropped real fast according to the gauge. While the whole assembly is out, how can I check, or get checked, the fuel level sender?

And if you go to the AutoZone online site, you might find it there. I remember looking on that site for a fuel pump, and when I found the pump, they suggested also buying a new *sock*/filter/strainer/whatever. And they had a number for it if memory serves.

See attached jpg. Also as mentioned, the dealer SHOULD have them. Probably DON'T. At least my DEALER wouldn't have 'em. Shoot all the auto dealers just after you shoot all the lawyers.
Ooops. Didn't noitice that large blank space in the jpg earlier. No matter. The part number is on that page.
