Fuel Pump Switch

Hey guys, i really want to install some switches in my fuel pump line in case my car floods or as a added security measure. Would a standard 12V switch work or would i have to get a more heavy duty switch. I also want to install several switches so you have to switch them in a specific combination to make stealing the car even more difficult. id appreciate any help. thanks -alex

A switch and a relay would be your best bet

switch the relay circuit, not the fuel pump power wiring, that's the usual way of doin it. rotaryressurection.com's got a good how-to on it...

If you want to a "security" system where you have to turn on a bunch of switches in a specific sequence, you'll need a (microprocessor) sequencer - I doubt you have the abilities to build such a circuit, as you're asking a much simpler question about the fuel pump cut-out switch.

Why not just install an alarm in the vehicle?

Buy a click-on, click-off switch and mount this under the carpet on a bracket.  Only you know where this switch is and keep it a secret.  Keep the switch away from feet and hands, so you don't accidently hit the switch while you're driving.

Good idea Ted.

I've always liked this DIY immobiliser. I built one ages ago and it worked great. You could connect it to the fuel pump relay instead of a switch.

REted, you mean just a simple hidden on/off switch right? I have a couple of 12VDC switches lying around from radio shack. They are rated at 25Amps. They are SPST contacts? would these work? NZConvertible, did you ever have any trouble with this setup at all? is there any tips you could offer if i did it this way? thanks -alex

They would work no problem.
Fuel pump fuse is 20A max.

i might just end up doing the switch. although the setup NZconvertible suggested sounds really cool and alot more reassuring, its alot more complicated, and im sure a very well hidden switch will work just as good. thanks very much for the help guys, and if you have anymore suggestions, please, any info will help. thanks again. -alex

NZ. was it as complecated as it seems? Im not great at wiring, but i can do it. IS there a specific kind of reed switch that you would recommend. I searched online but i get a number of varying reed switches. Could sudden shocks trigger the switch to open? summer heat ok on it? -alex

Not really. I spent a bit of time figuring out exactly how it worked since it's not immediately obvious, but if you follow the wiring diagram exactly it will work perfectly.

I just went to an electronics store and bought the kind of reed switch used to monitor doors in cheap home alarms. Only cost a few bucks. I never had any problems with shocks or heat.

I put mine in the middle console, hidden but then no-so, easy to run wires to. Got to love not having to get out and pull the injector fuse to get it runnin'
