fuel pump "sock"

I was adviced to check and/or replace my fuel pump "sock". So, i took out my fuel pump and looked at it. How do i know if the "sock" needs to be replaced or not?

How old is it? If you don't know or it's over 60K miles, go ahead and spend the whopping 12 dollars on a new one.

Is it ripped? Torn? Disfigured? Dirty as hell? If its clogged up with crap you can probably remove it and just spray it out with carb cleaner.. or be crazy and drop the $10 bucks or whatever it is on a new one.

If it was like mine, it was torn, letting large rust particles into my fuel lines, then getting into my fuel rail, and clogging my injectors.

ok, <puts flame-retardent vest on>

when i got my walboro, it didnt come with the sock.. so i installed it without one. was told that as long as i didnt go below 1/4 tank of gas i should be ok, as the sock is to keep the pump from overheating once the gas drops below it.

(however of course ive run below 1/4 many a time since)

dangerous or myth? getting a replacement sock is on my list of things to do this spring.

replace it. There's no reason not to. You will have to eventually anyway and its only $10
