?-fuel pump replacement on 88 SE

I am pretty sure that my stock 183k mile pump has taken a dump. I called around to my local parts stores and stock replacements are about $135

I saw that I can get a walbro high flow replacement for around $100 and my question is will the higher flowing pump cause the car to run rich or any other driveability issues?

If so I would rather just go with a stock replacement. I also saw on Aaron Cakes site that you can use a stock FD pump, but again will this make for a need to have an SAFC or other fuel controller?

The car is bone stock and I just recently bought it and I am just trying to get it running reliably so I don't necessarily need a high flow pump or anything at this time but if I can save a few bucks and get something that will possibly be better and or needed down the road then so be it. Thanks guys

Brandon

The n/a FCs run pig-rich from the factory, and I don't think a higher-flow pump is a step in the right direction. I'd stick with a stock replacement.

The main question I guess I am asking is will a high flow pump make it run richer or not?

I get that a high flow pump can supply more flow but won't the fuel pressure regulator keep it at the right pressure so it won't make it run rich? Or am I totally off the ball here? Thanks again

I'm gunna say that you're right on the FPR taking up the extra fuel flow. The engines running rich is the fuel map and injectors and not really the fuel pump. The fuel rails will run the same amount of psi through them regardless. A FD pump like I use in a lot of my Turbo swaps are a drop in replacement to the stockers and would IMO work fine in a NA. If I rememeber correctly on one of my swaps while we were waiting for the TII engine to arrive we put the FD pump in to not have to worry about it later and we drove the NA car around with no problems.

*I have a few NA pumps I'd sell if you want to stay stock...

Thanks for the reply Chris, I Pmed you by the way about the pumps.

Can anyone else also chime in to confirm that a higher flowing aftermarket pump should work fine? Thanks again everybody

According to walbrofuelpumps.com, an autohorized reseller of Walbro pumps say that the higher flow pump will not cause it to run rich because of the FPR which again is what I was thinking. Here is the text copy and pasted:

Installing a Walbro high pressure fuel pump in a non-performance vehicle will not damage your motor. All fuel first passes through fuel injectors and a fuel pressure regulator which only send the required amount of fuel into the intake manifold, sending the unused fuel (usually more than 1000%) back to the fuel tank.

I also sent Walbro's aftermarket division here in MI an email to double check as well.
