Fuel pump relay Q
I was told that the fuel pump relay is bad in my 87 T2 and was wondering if anyone had a part number. I work at a parts store and I can't get it (looking by application), neither can the other local parts stores. I ran into the same problem with my Jeep, and after finding a part number I was able to pull one off the shelf that worked. I am hoping the same will happen with the RX. The Previous owner of the car told me he found one for about 130 bucks, but can't remember where.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but I am not sure. The previous owner told me that it is the part located near the steering column under the dash. It looks like a relay, but has a small wiring harness plugged into it.
I have been studying the wiring diagrams in the online FSM but diagrams only help me a little. I would pull it out and check it but haven't had the time yet to do so.
If I am making this more confusing just let me know and I will wait till my next day off to yank it out. Thanks.

Under the dash is the Circuit Opening Relay. It feeds the fuel pump thru the Fuel PUmp Resistor Relay package on some/most cars.
There is a thing called a Fuel Pump Check Connector near the right front strut tower. You jumper that with a piece of wire to get the fuel pump to run if the key is to ON. What your doing when you do that jumper job, is put a ground on the Circuit Opening Relays coil. That relay pulls in and puts power on the fuel pump connector at the left rear strut tower area.
Just look for CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY in the wiring diagrams. Its to be seen on page 50-34 of the 88FSM that is online. The wiring diagram section.
In a 86-87 manual its NOT on page 50-34. I don't have mine with me, but its on the first five or six pages for sure. Look for the fuel pump and you'll find the Circuit Opening Relay usually on the same page.

Circuit Opening Relay.................above the steering column inside the car.
Main Relay.............big *** thing in the engine bay near the Trail coils. Has two electrical connectors on it. It's about five times as big as the Circuit Opening Relay.

OK, thanks I was calling it by the wrong name. You wouldn't happen to have a part number for the Circuit opening relay, would you Hailers?

I must say it is great to work for a multi billion dollar corporation that doesn't care about the expense of cross-reference software. I brought the Mazda part numbers to work and got a cross for both to GP-Sorenson parts. I am not sure if they are any cheaper than the Mazda parts, but here they are.
Circuit Opening Relay....Mazda Part N326-18-821A crosses to GP part 41-5389, list price is $49.99.
Main Relay...Mazda Part N326-18-811B crosses to GP part 41-5403, list price $99.99
If they indeed are cheaper any AutoZone should be able to get them.

I think I found what made my car stop running. The bottom of the air box was rubbing against the wiring plug for the fuel pump relay and resistor. Because the worn part of the wires was so close to the plug I had to splice in a few sections to fix it. Unfortunately that didn't make any difference. I am positive the exposed wires shorted something out but haven't found what yet.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should check? I checked for power at the fuel pump and got 1 wire with 12+ volts and 1 with ~3-4 volts, yet the pump still isn't kicking on ( The pump was just replaced, brand new). All of the main fuses are alright (the ones by the strut tower) and I ran out of daylight to check the small fuses in the car.
Oh, yeah. One more thing, is there any way to positivly tell if the pump relay and resistor sustained any damage when the wires frayed? Thanks.

Edit:
After looking at the wiring diagram again I figured out that I am not getting power to my pump. The blue wire supplying the pump is reading no voltage. The wire I was getting 12+ volts on was the sending unit supply.
