GA Fuel pickup problems under hard cornering

We recently finished the 24 Hours of LeMons in Toledo this past weekend and the car ran well with the exception of a fuel pickup issue 12 hours into the race. While cornering (turning left) the car would sputter and lose power. It seemed initially that as long as we kept the gas tank full, the problem would go away until about half a tank but eventually the problem remained regardless of the fuel level.

Any ideas as to what might've caused this and how to fix it? There was another FC running and they did not have this problem. We have an 86 non-turbo.

Yep, Fuel sock in gas tank and covered in the FAQ for FC found at the top of this section as well as in the new member technical sections.

You will want to read the FAQ for FC before posting. Many commonly asked questions (such as the one this thread was started with) are covered there.

Thanks. I apologize for the overlook, I assumed it was more of an issue than something that would be in a FAQ. I will check there now though.

Thanks!

When I bought the car, the guy gave me an extra fuel filter which I'm reading on here is what everyone is calling the fuel sock? I hadn't changed it yet, but probably should have.

Nope thats not the fuel sock, the fuel sock is the pick-up in the fuel tank, Open up the tank and pull the pump, on the bottom their will be this little screen dealie. Replace it.

yep, as cheesebox says, fuel filter is different than the fuel sock.

The fuel filter is on the driver side underhood frame rail. It is on the pressurized side of the fuel pump. The fuel sock is at the fuel pump in the fuel tank and is on the non pressurized side of the fuel pump.

Over time the sock gets clogged up with the gums, wax, and varnish found in most gasoline's. This is what wastes the sock and makes it not like to pick up on fast left turns (usually because the bottom and sides of the sock are so clogged up and you normally don't let the gas get low enough to notice otherwise).

Thanks for the info guys. I realize that search is the first resort but unfortunately some of the thread descriptions aren't always intuitive.

I didn't see a How To section, is there one? This would be helpful for any future issues that we may have.
