Fuel Guage Half Broken

whenever my fuel guage goes below half it just drops to empty. when i fill it up, it goes back up to full, but at half every time it just drops all the way down. it's kind of funny to watch it do a little dance when i have about half and i'm going downhill/uphill or decelerating/accellerating but i'd much rather it worked that not. where should i start looking for the problem? just some bad soder points? or do i need to find a multi-meter to check to see if the sender is giving out the right voltage? there is a '90 GTU at the junkyard with a guage cluster in it, but i don't want to buy it if it's not going to fix my car. Any way to rule out the guage as being faulty?

any help is appreciated Thanks

I'd be looking at the sender and sender float. It sounds like they are out of alignment, or the sender float is full of gas

I sort of have a similar problem with my car, when I fill the car the guage only goes to the half way mark. When I starts the get below half talk, the gauge drops normally. Not really a problem, but I'd like it to work.

Anyway, how hard is it to get to the float, do I need to take out the tank?

Its easy. Pull the carpet in the hatch area, undo the 4 screws holding the cover plate on, now get some compressed air and blow all the dirt and **** off the top of the gas tank. Undo the 8 (IIRC) screws holding the pump assembly down and lift up. You are going to have to fiddle with it to get it out the hole.
