Question fuel gauge wiring

Anyone an expert in 2nd gen. fuel gauge wiring? I'm sure this is probably in the shop manual, but I've never had a 2nd. gen so I figured I would ask here.

Here's my situation: I have a RX-2 with a 88 EFI 13B, custom fuel cell & the stock 2nd gen. fuel pump/fuel level sender, etc. The previous owner ran wires from the sending unit up to the gauge cluster but never hooked them to anything due to lack of proper gauges I'm assuming. I snagged the fuel/temp gauge section out of a 2nd gen. and am trying to wire it up to the 2nd gen. fuel sender. I have a yellow & green wire (colors probably aren't the same as factory) one being FUEL, the other GND. I hooked these to the gauge but got nothing so I'm assuming it needs some sort of power? I noticed there was a "7v" on the back of the gauge cluster, is this 7 volts or does it need 12v? 7v seems like an odd number but I'm no electrical expert so that's why I'm asking.

Any info/tips would be greatly appreciated. Please help me get this working so I don't have to guess how much gas is left, heh.

thanks,
Mike

The gauge is a 7V gauge so that it doesn't read differently if the voltage in the car is down below 12V.

Are you just using the 2nd gen gauge in the RX-2 cluster? If so, you will need to provide it with 7V. The LM317 adjustable voltage regulator IC is an easy way to get this from a 12V source. Take a look at its datasheet for a wiring diagram.

Thanks Aaron, where does one get this LM317, just any ol' electronics supply? I don't have the gauge in the RX-2 cluster itself, I was just going to mount it somewhere easily visible once I got it working. I should be able to get 12v from a source behind the dash.

thanks,
Mike
