Fuel/Gas Smell in 1990 Convertible
Short the fuel pump (with engine off). Soon area of engine and cabin completely saturated with fuel smell. Can't really determine where it is coming from, have checked all hoses very carefully for leaks. Had an experienced rotary mechanic check the entire fuel system as well.
Sometimes while sitting at a light I can smell it, as well. Seems to be worse in the cold (which points to a leaking hose, I think). Or maybe the heater is importing more smell into the closed cabin (top up in the cold, usually).
Anyway, the mechanic offered to take the injector body off and look for a leak in there - I declined. Is it worth the $100 to do that? Is that a job I can do without too much trouble - I am ok if I have directions, I bought the Haynes book.
Open to any opinions. Is there a place in these cars that is prone to leaking?

i would say it is your pulsation damper has failed but you have a 90 with the new style pd.
whatever you do, dont drive it, if you have to you MUST HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN THE CAR, but you should only drive it if you are going to get it fixed. your car will catch fire if you continually drive it with leaking fuel.
do a search on pulsation damper or PD and look there. the problem is usually in S4s but yours could fail as well.
the pd is under the intake manifold on the passengers side of the car,facing the front. it is a small brass bell looking thing with a divot in the middle. it is on the end of the primary fuel rail.

I will look at the pulsation damper. Do I have to replace the entire fuel rail if it is found to be faulty? I have been driving it with the same smell for about 4 months. It's my only car, and my daily driver.

You should read the sticky thread on pulsation dampers, it can turn out really bad if you ignore it! Better safe and out the cost to check it, than sorry and out the cost to replace it and the rest of the stuff it destroys, if not your entire car!
yes you will have to replace the entire fuel rail. it isnt that expensive.
and rather easy to do. (as long as you dont drop a nut into the lower intake manifold like i did
)
