Easy job... It is on the lower driver side frame rail in the engine bay. A relatively quick in and out.

depressurize the fuel system.
- start your car. open your hatch. lift the carpet up and you'll see a metal cover with screws. take the screws out and take the metal cover out. now, you see the fuel pump. while the car's running, disconnect the wires on your fuel pump (not the fuel pump lines). the car is going to sputter and die, that's normal coz you've just de-pressurized the fuel system .

removing and replacing fuel filter
- it would be easier to remove it from underneath. there are 2 bolts/nuts (cant remember which one) that holds the bracket of the fuel filter. remove those. leave the bracket with the fuel filter for now. put some rags/newspapers/pans to catch some of the fuel when you take the lines off the filter. now, take the lines off of the filter. then replace the filter. note how you took the filter out, coz you need to put the new filter the same way. install the lines onto your new filter, replace the bracket and there you go.

priming your fuel system
- connect your fuel pump back (DO NOT FORGET THIS!!!). on your passenger side of the car, there's a 2-pin white connector dangling that's not connected to anything. put a jumper wire on it. now, put turn your key to on (dont start the car) for 10 seconds and you'll hear a sound. dont worry about it since it's your fuel system priming up. after 10 seconds or more, turn the car off and remove the wire out and you're done.

if someone wants to add anything, please add. i just wrote this from the top of my head.

Why do you all insist on doing this the hard way? Just disconnect the fuel relay connector under the dash by your right knee while the car is running. You can even do it one handed! Not too mention your information is wrong. The only quick disconnect for the fuel pump in that area is in the rear left strut tower area. This requires removal of some trim and more carpet in order to access it.

That connector is YELLOW NOT WHITE!!! And you really should use this time to check for leaks, not just to prime the system.

Can someone be more specific about the installation. The manual I downloaded doesnt show anything. However, the little bit it does show looks like the currrent filter is installed upside down. Does the lip go on the top or the bottom? 1989 GXL non turbo.

Thanks

Heheh yeah oops I didn't see the teeny tiny 8pt font date :x

The "In" side of the filter should go to the hose that goes to the tank yeah.
