Fuel cut switch hooked up to main cruise control button?

I want to have a fuel cut switch wired to the "Main" cruise control button. To where if it's pressed in, the fuel is off, and if it's out, the fuel is on. Or vice versa. Doesn't really matter. I took apark the dash today, and it looks fairly easy to do, as long as I know which wire does what.

I mean, my cruise control doesn't work, so I don't care about the switch. I thought I might as well put it to use, and it's a good place to put the fuel cut switch, because no one would suspect it, and it doesn't look all tacky-ricey.

Has anyone done this? Steps to do it safely? Plz? kthxbye.

Try checking continuity between the plugs "ME" and "MB" and flip the switch for on - off I don't know what the switch is rated at so be careful not to blow it.

I'm so ******* bad with wiring. I have a basic idea of what I'm looking at there, but I still don't know if I should do it. Or how I should do it. Just take out the MB ME wires, and put in the fuel cut wire? Is that all? Or is there more to it?

Before you do anything take a multimeter with ohms or continuity tester and test the plugs "MB" and "ME" for continuity and find out what way is on and off. (I think when the button is in its on) But then if the switch works Then use them Plugs for the switch. I cannot help you with the fuel pump tho because I havn't messed with it. And Im not sure if the switch can even handle the amperage of the fuel pump.... It might but Im no expert for that so you will have to ask someone else.

Well I already have the switch wired. I just want to re-wire it to that button. It's not going to be hard, if all I have to do is take out existing MB and ME wires, and hook up the ones for the fuel pump. Anyone ever done this? Does it work? Is it too much for the switch?

I'm going to take a stab at this, now correct me if I'm wrong.

Print out the FSM page 50-92. Pull the cruise switch out of the cluster but keep it connected. With the key in the on position, check for voltage on the Gray/Yellow wire on the plug that goes into the cruise switch. Looking at the BACK of the connector, It is the second wire from the left on the top row of wires. See the diagram of connector CR2 on the right side of the page in the FSM?

Check voltage on that with the main switch on and then check with the main switch off. It probably switches 12V with the button pushed in. Now run that Gray/Yellow wire to your relay or however you have your fuel pump wired up. You could probably cut it from the back of the plug (don't cut too close to the plug though) and use the side that comes from the switch, not the dash harness side.

Yeah and don't have that dinky little wire power the whole fuel pump obviously. You will need to put in a relay somewhere and power the pump straight from the battery.

I always had the idea of turning on the rear defroster or blinker, headlights etc, and have it activate a relay which will allow the ignition switch to energize the starter.

Wouldn't be to hard to do. It would just get annoying after a while I think.

So where you live again A fuel cut off is a switch that goes to the fuel pump, to shut it off and on at will. People do it to help prevent there car from being stolen.

I really recommend you use a relay for this, use that the button of your choosing to trigger a relay that cuts the fuel on/off.

As is, I dont recommend placement there at all, too close to moving hands

I don't recommend it cause I was talking about fuel cutoff switches and first place my wife thought she would try if she were stealing a car is the cruise control. Granted she's much more intelligent then the average theif ... but who knows.

I liked one suggestion I saw which was hiding the switch under the shifter boot. Not sure how safe it is or practical. The boot pops up pretty easily on mine and I figure that with a cover on it I wouldn't accidently hit the button.

That said ... even with my 626 I always preferred a switch that I kinda have to reach behind the a panel and crook my finger for. For instance I might wanna install one beside the steering wheel on the inside of the upper dash panel. I have an ancillary dash light switch there on the 626.

Yep,

It can be a great thing

Especially since she's been researching the Haynes manual for the FC since we picked it up. I suspect she knows more about the engines then half the Mazda techs in a 5 mile radius.
