Theyre not the same.
If I remember correctly it has something to do with the EGR passage cast into the housing, and if you run them the wrong way they wont line up. Not a big deal if youre not dealing with emissions.

The EGR on the S4 is on the center Iron, and on the S5 it's bolted to the upper intake manifold.
Yes they are nearly identical. The only different that i know of is the rear housing on T2s has a passage for the coolant.

No, they are not the same. The difference is in the passages for the air that goes from the airpump .....to the air control valve .......then to the exaust ports. The passages that lead to the exaust diffusers in the rotor housings are NOT the same. If you swap the rotor housings....the airpump air will NOT go to the exaust ports i.e. the diffusers in the exaust port in the housings.
I'm not talking a thing about EGR valves and egr passages. I'm talking air from the airpump that goes thru the acv to the EXAUST ports on the rotor housings.
If you don't EVER have to pass emissions and don't care whether the next owner of your car has to pass or not, then swap the housings. The performance will not be any different than if you put them in their correct place.....if you discount emissions performance. And it's immoral to sell someone a car/engine in this condition and not tell them it's buggered up.
