Front cover gasket replacement

I just finished installing a new fron cover gasket on my brothers 1986 rx7, and now I can't get the car timed, after playing with the timing for a few minutes, I can get it to start and keep a steady idle... Where my next problem occurs... The car is vibrating dramatically under part-full throttle, any ideas as too what could have happened??? This type of thing is soooo much easier on my mustang, haha, j/k...

Did you have the clutch pedal pushed in while you removed the front cover?

Well to answer your question, no the clutch wasn't ingaged, nor did his manual tell me to do that. Would that be a serious problem, or can it be fixed??? I am currently in the process of taking everything back off now, I just came inside to check to see what you all thought it could be. If you could respond back soon I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok heres the deal, when you remove that main bolt on the front casting that the pulley is on the whole e-shaft will shift back from the pressure of the clutch. When it shifts there is a possibility that the needle(thrust) bearing will fall out of place. When you go back to tighten the main bolt down it crushes that bearing causing all sorts of prolbems. It can be fixed but you will need to remove the oil pump to get the chain out of the way and all of the other stuff on the front of the e-shaft. I guess its not all that bad to fix but will take some time. Make sure when you put a new one in there to have the clutch depressed and also make sure that the e-shaft is all the way front. Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.

Okay, I removed the front cover today, so tomorrow I will try and go further into the engine. Is it absolutely necessary to remove the oil pan to gain access to the torrington bearings and other components? This is my first time working on a rotary engine, so please bear with me I am guessing that the bolt w/washer, once removed will allow the timing chain to be removed? Is this correct, or do you remove it another way? Thanks for all that have helped me, this will definetly be a learning experience. Also, if I need to replace the bearing, seal, etc... What would a good estimate be for the price of the parts?

NO. If you have the cover off that should be enough. Just remove the nut off the oil pump and slide everything fwd and off. Remember the order things came off.

Okay guys/girls, I just removed all of the parts, it looks as though only the front spacer is chewed up, could that be what caused all of the vibration? Or should I look further into motor?

Go further.

check everything that the Mazdatrix faq talks about.

Report your findings.

Well I pulled the rest of the parts out, all the way to the main gear. And the only part that looks bad is the front spacer... How could that be, shouldn't the bearing that was smashed into the spacer be damaged in some way? The only other thing is on both bearings there is some wear on about two ***** on each one, but they still spin freely, so I don't think that would cause any harm. What now???

the parts are too cheap to not replace all

keep the clutch in, replace all rearings and spacers.

measure pre the instructions on Mazdatrixs' website, re-assemble.

You'll feel much better knowing you did thins.

Take a "scorched earth" policy to the problem, and replace all moving parts involved.
