Question Fresh rebuild problem

The car in questions is a 1991 and has sat for the past 3 years, so keep that in mind. I just got a new (reman) engine, had the shop swap over the harness, manifolds, injectors, etc. After a while of struggling with it I finally turned it over for the first time this evening. Once it hit operating temp tho, it started to smoke quite a bit. I cant put my finger on the smell, its not oil, and its not coolant...the only thing i can really think of is that the coolant seals were blown in the old motor, so maybe the junk might have still been in the exhaust and it was just burning it off making a weird smell.

Anyone else have any thoughts or ideas what the problem might be?

The smoke is white, its not really think, but its enough to drift about 10-15 feet before dissipating completely. The engine was built by Lucky 7 racing in Duarte C.A.

Give it some run time and see if it persists.

I ran it for a while, and the smoking seems to have gone away, like i had assumed it was probably just stuff burning off. Now i have the 'check engine' light on (solid, not flashing), and when it comes to electrical i suck, so i have no idea what could be causing it.

What are some common reasons the check engine light comes on?

One of the few good things about S5 models is its a little bit easier to run the error codes. You have to jumper a wire and watch the check engine light flash a morse code. Something along those lines. Gotta search tho, ive never owned a S5.
