Question Freeze plugs?

The other day I was flipping through my haynes repair manual for my car and found some directions for something or other that said to replace the 'freeze plugs' what are these? and where? I forgot where in the book it was, and it's not in the index. (I think it has to do with the cooling system)

just curiosity nagging at me

Freeze plugs are idiot-proofers for the engine block. If you use too much water in the coolant, it will freeze in the winter and crack the engine block. A freeze plug is a little metal plug that is pressed into a hole in the block that will pop out if the coolant freezes, to give the water somewhere to expand to without cracking the block.

If you run the proper coolant, you'll never need them.

I didn't know rotaries had them.

wow i didnt know such a feature existed, but alas it is worthless because i live in florida where it never freezes and you can get away with runing 30%/70% antifreeze/water if you want.
