Found this behind the steering wheel, what is it?
So I'm a first gen guy and until today have never played with the wiring of a second gen. So my friend picks up his 7 knowing that I can help with the work and we thought it had an ignition problem. Apparently the key selector just popped off the back of the lock cylinder on the column so cheap fix there, but while I was back there I found this little box with a push pin on it (see the pic) and no matter what I do it won't stay where its supposed to go. What is it and what does it do?
Anyway thanks for the help guys, last things we need to do tomorrow are bleed the brakes with new fluid and replace the clutch hydraulics. Should be an easy day compared to the fuel filter and bad gas we went through today. Car sat for a year and the engine seems perfect. I need to get him on these forums soon.
Edit: also forgot and don't wanna make a new thread about it. The car came with a Koyo in it and I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas about what to do about the second coolant reservoir bung on the Koyo. Currently I have a line going from there and a screw in the other end to cap it off for now, but I'm just curious about what other people have done about this.

Ya don't need it.It does go on the ignition switch though.
2 pins on the ignition case.(you'll see em) that part is held on by some little "x cut"Washers, that when you push it on the pin they lock.

Doesn't look familiar at all.
Wait a minute...is this a convertible?

Lol not a convertible, but that does remind me that the sunroof sticks. Meh its a sunroof.
Yeah I have no idea where those washers might be, but the holding pins are still there. I've been putting it back in blind all day trying to figure out what it does. Funny thing was I was prepared to wire this thing as a push button start with a set of switches when I parted down the dash. Now that the selector is back in place the key just falls out.
As for the cap, I was thinking that before. By release cap I assume you are referring to a radiator cap or are you talking about a part that would actually attach to the bung?

Ok cool, good to know. When we first got it and replaced the battery it made this obnoxious buzz that I thought was some anti theft system but sat there and thought about it and remembered that my first gen made that noise when the low coolant sensor wire broke. Terrible noise. Worse in these cars.

I actually replaced that part on an old switch, then used the switch without it on another car.
So you can cut the leads and tape them,or take them out of the Connector.

trust me.That is part of the Switch wiring and that part is attached to the ignition.
The Light for the key is a little pigtail that hangs off the Lower plastic steering column surround.
Foam connector.
