Should be able to remove the intercooler with a screw driver (flathead or phillips) depending on the clamps (Or maybe pliers if it's the screwless type, I've never seen them before however) As for compression, I'd say around 100-105psi would be good.

I honestly dont think it matters which you test compression from. The leading and trailing are both in the same chamber with equal compression on both ends. 105+ psi is good. Anything lower and you probably are looking at a rebuild soon.

TO remove the intercooler you'll need screw driver, pliers, and 10mm 12mm wrench, be carefull not to break the plastic pieces that go into the back of the intercooler, and why do you wanna remove this before you buy it? I dont see this doing much for you,

also drive it!! make sure that it doesnt smoke, check coolant, Check headlights make sure they go up and down, Check the condition of the oil, Check the condition of the airfilter, Watch boost guage!!!

I think that as far as compression goes, anything above 85 is supposed to be good (I THINK, I DONT REMEMBER RIGHT OFF HAND) but it should make three bumps on the compression tester, THis tells that each face of the rotor has good compression....

if you get a chance take off the intake from the turbo and try and move the compressor wheel up or down if it "wiggles" easily you will be looking at a new turbo soon! easy thing to check and makes a HUGE difference!
Good Luck
