Follow-up on engine cuts out Q
RX7 1990 non-turbo Driving along at any speed or petal pressure when engine starts to die. Sputters longer if you don't press harder on the gas, otherwise dies out more quickly. Here is the Kicker - turn off ignition for 1 second, turn back on and continue on running perfectly for another 10-15 minutes. ECU replaced, still happens. Mechanic finally able to catch a read-out while it was happening - code indicates it is the oil metering pump sending a message to ECU that it is not mettering enough oil, or falsely sending a message that it is not mettering enough oil, and the ECU respondes by cutting back injection so the engine slows down so as to not burn-up. BUT turning the key off and on resets. But this has been going on for years and the engine never fried. OK - just replace "oil metering pump" - well, from the dealer just $1,800! for the part. What is the standard stock '90 RX7 worth? $2,200? So far no luck at local salvage yards. Possible rebuild? Possible disable bad message to ECU? Any help appreciated.

Search for "limp mode" and you will find a couple threads on how to trick the ECU into thinking the OMP is there and working fine. Might want to start running pre-mix for some insurance.
