Fog lights

I'm trying to rig my fog lights as daytime running lights so I took someone on the forum's advice and connected the + from the fog to the + on the power mirror switch. That just made the lights go on with the power being on... for some strange reason. It seemed like they got more power with both the wire connected and the lights on. What's going on? How do I do this?!

Thanks muchly as always!

I don't know what gage wire is in the power mirror circuit, but it can't be that big...I don't know if I would use that particular circuit for amp-sucking fog lights...what's wrong with using the 30A headlight circuit & a switched relay?

no, the wire going to the mirror circuit isn't that big. I have no idea what would be wrong with using the headlight circuit except that it doesn't go right by the fog light switch. (I know next to nothing about electronics mind you)

Why the heck are the headlights coming on when I do that and turn the ignition on? AFAIK, I didn't even touch the headlight circuit.

I don't know about your headlight problems (now is a good time to learn about electrical systems!), but see if you can find another circuit with a beefier wire to handle the current of the fog lights...Are the fog lights standard equipment on your car? Canadian cars are a bit different with the lighting, aren't they?

I live in Virginia. It's a US model 1990 TII. Someone has got to know why connecting those two wires made my headlights go on...

What two wires? Why can't you just "un-connect" them to get back to normal operation?

I can unconnect them. I want the foglights to go on as daytime running lights. I made a temporary connection with the wires I said, but instead of making the fogs go on, the headlights go on, but not up. (like FTP)... weird... why?

I don't know off the top of my head, & I don't have the schematics with me to help ya track it down...But it actually sounds like a fairly simple problem to fix, once I know which wires you're playing with...Gotta go now, though, maybe tomorrow...

ok here is the way I did mine. I assume you were trying to take my advice, so here is the exact way I did mine on my 89TII.

There are two wires that goto the fog light switch, dark green and light green. There should be a connector where the wires change color. your going to need to cut the light green wire close to the connector.
So, so far we have a long piece of light green wire coming out of the switch that doesnt goto anything at this point.
Then take the light green wire from the fog light switch and connect it to the dark green wire on the power mirrors switch. And thats it.

Make sure you solder and tape your connections. And tape off the loose end of the light green wire at the connector.

Disclaimer: I am not held liable for someone elses mistakes. Also when wiring anything a DMM should be used.

Took a look at the exposed wires on the way to work and the colors don't match up. Are the wiring diagrams for all those connections on one page somewhere in the FSM? I have a MM to check wires. I have a red/black and red wire going into the fog switch. I also only have a green/white and green/yellow wire going into the mirror switch along with a black, purple and another one...

Like I said, I have a MM so I can check wires. What should I be connecting?

ok I will go outside and look, I think that those colors match up to the wiring on my car but before the connectors.

ok so I have a red/black and red/white going to the fog light switch. Then on the power mirrors switch I have the red/black from the fog light switch connected to the blue/black from the power mirrors switch. I can take a pic but I dont know how to post it here.

I just checked and I connected the red/black before the fog light plug to the blue black before the mirror plug and that caused the headlights to turn on. Are you sure those are the wires?

As always, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!

so close yet so far away
you need to connect the wire that comes out of the switch to the power mirrors wire. Then youll be done. I like your illustration.

glad I could help! I will keep my eyes open for a switch for you. Probably really hard to come by but.......it would be worth it. Also changing the wiring this way allows you to keep your fog lights on while your brights are on. Just be kind to on coming traffic
