FMICs and bumper supports...

I'm about to get a FMIC and I really don't want to loose my front bumper support... I was planning on getting the greddy r-spec 2 row. am I going to have to cut it at all? or can I just stick it behind it (I know not as much air will get to it but I'd rather my car's front still be recongnizable if I ever hit something). let me know if and if I do, how much I have to cut.

thanks

You've gotta cut it fairly significant'y for any variation of the Greddy kit (aside from the old, right side entry/exit piping kits)

The Corksport kit claims only minor trimming, but I've never seen one in person. I used a Godspeed FD core for mine, and run custom piping beside the rad. I only cut a hole in the center of my re-bar to improve airflow to the IC and rad. I didn't have to trim anything of of it to fit the core in the car however.

In short, to fit the R-spec kit in, you *can* keep the re-bar, but there will be some extensive trimming of the center to fit the core. Search for FMIC threads to get an idea, there's plenty of photos out there with bumpers off and IC's exposed.

that's what I was afraid of :-/

has anyone had any experience with the HKS kit? I'll look into the Corksport one.

the corksport one basically requires removal of the bumper support. The end-tanks sit right where the supports would be... although if you were to turn it upside down on the brackets, cut and extend the tubes that come with it, and possibly trim the back-side of the bumper support, then it might fit. Thats gonna have to wait for next summer for me to try out though... i doubt I'll have time before then.

if you turn it upside down it has the same basic structure as the greedy kits with the end tanks exiting on the bottom...

what do you guys use to trim the bumper support? I don't think my dremmel is going to work

I just recently installed my greddy kit last weekend. I bought it used so i did it without the instructions and the way i put it on which is i assume the way it was intended to go on leaves little room if any for the original support to go back on. the intercooler blocks the mounting brackets that it attaches to.

if you dont want to mess with the bumper support make some brackets that make your radiator verticle and mount your ic directly infront of your radiator. if you do this make sure you have propper ducting.

yeah, I'm wondering about that too, have you tried closing your hood yet?

I might just go v-mount... that way I can keep the bumper support, not have to worry about overheating and have better throttle response... but it is a lot more work.

this is turning out to be a lot more involved than I had planed....

fmic

you could always just get a smaller core and do custom piping like i did. i also didn't want to cut into the car. my I/C is 28x7x2.5, it's not huge but way better than stock! i also used 2" piping so i didn't need to cut holes to route the piping. the intercooler sits in front of the oil cooler at almost the same angle. ducting is key, especially the oil cooler.

yeah, I saw your thread not too long ago pistones, that's what got me worried. I didn't even realize you had to remove the bumper support with the greddy kit. it's totally rediculous that you have to remove that with every kit out there. especially if 88rxn/a can fit a 4" intercooler in there without removing it!

hey, do you guys think it would be possible to buy a greddy one and just mount it in a difference place so that it clears the bumper support?

EDIT: well I know it's possible... but how hard do you think it would be?

I don't get why any FMIC kit would require removal of the bumper support or crossmember. It's just lazyness by the designer that they do.

mine is almost routed the same way as aaron's. the greddy core is just too big. it is good for high power cars but with mild upgrades it seems like a waste, cutting a car up for something that a smaller core can do.
