FMIC questions

i noticed on the (few) FMIC turbo cars that there is no rad. can someone confirm this? im not a fully tech inclined guy so im not sure.

WHERE AM I GOING WITH THIS? well....if the FMIC acts as a rad, is it hypothetically possible to replace my stock rad with an FMIC?

pls no flamming, again im not an expert....just a nice good answer will do.

thanks guys

The car needs the radiator. The radiator is still there, just probably to hard to see in pictures. The rad is a water to air heat exchanger. iIts purpose is to cool the engine down by cooling the coolant. FMICs are air to air heat exhanger. To prevent help cool down air before it enters the throttle body.

I don't know what cars you were looking at, because most cars that have a FMIC leave the radiator exactly where it was. There's no visual difference at all.

the FMIC is mounted directly infront of the radiator
You will never see the radiator through the FMIC

You can't see the radiator from outside the car with or without a FMIC, so that's a moot point.

However anyone who's opened an FC's bonnet lately should have no problem locating the radiator.

this is y im asking: theres this car i saw from a local RX-7 tuner. its an S5 N/A with a 13b-t conversion but using an upgraded turbo. the car was gutted, no carpeting and anything not needed under the hood was taken out (washer bottle....etc.)

when he showed me the works, i noticed 2 pipes running from the FMIC into the engine/turbo....behind it was a fan. im not sure if that was a custom rad, and i wasn't sure if there was a rad at all coz the unit itself looked like just an FMIC.

also, another point to this thread: for N/A cars, will installing an intercooler benefit you? as in, connecting it to ur motor/intake (whatever that place is called) to provide cooler air all the time?

just an idea that popped in my head.

you would be trying to cool air at one temp with air at the same temp.
it would be like putting the IC on the intake of a turbo car instead of after the turbo, pointless

and you sure you wernt looking at a big shinny Koyo thinking it was an IC?

Somebody COULD have put the radiator up front and mounted the intercooler in the radiator position... why anyone would do that.. i dunno..

HOWEVER, many FMIC installs route the IC pipes right BESIDE the radiator.. then through to the front of the car where the IC is (you may not see them after that if they but the stock baffle plate or an aluminum cover in front of the rad. At first glance, it might look like they are hooked uo to the radiator.

The K2RD aluminum radiator when shined up is so thick it may look like an IC at first..

Go look at it again... take a digicam and post us some pics!!!!
