flywheel removale

How do I get the flywheel nut off? It is on really tight and I can not get it off. Any suggestions?

First, try searching.

Second, use a 1" socket and LONG (4 foot) breaker bar or an impact wrench. Good luck.

i gave in and purchased a 450 ft-lb electric impact wrench. Works great and you don't even need a flywheel stopper.

edit: thinking of wrong side of engine. Oops! rxseven is correct. My mistake - was thinking of the other bolt on the other end.

Don't even fool around with a cheater bar. If you don't have one go rent the biggest, baddest impact you can find. You'll need a 2 1/8" socket. Sears has them for a reasonable price.

After you knock the nut off the easiest way to pull the flywheel is to use a couple bolts and some scraps of steel to press the flywheel off. There are a couple bolt holes in the center section of the flywheel. Think they're about a 10 x 1.5 mm. Don't quote me on that. Run the bolts into the holes. Use the steel scraps behind the flywheel for the bolts to run up against so you don't ding up the rear stationary gear. It also is a good idea to grind a chamfer on the end of the bolts so you don't bugger the threads when you run them up against the steel plate. Tighten the bolts evenly until the flywheel pops off. Much easier and safer than using a puller.

yea, i used a 54mm socket and a breaker bar and it didnt work. then i tried an impact wrench at 135ftlbs for about 2-3min on it and it came off finally. then we did the piece of steel and bolts strategy to try to get the flywheel off, and the steel bent. so we just got it as tight as we could without bending the steel too much and hammered away at the back end of the flywheel and it came off eventually.

ugh.. get yourself a LONG (like 4 feet) piece of angle iron. Line it up with the flywheel holes, and drill 2 holes through it. Bolt that sucker to the flywheel, and set it on the ground.

Now, go to sears and get a 2 1/8" socket (it's a 3/4" drive I believe), and that 18 inch or so long "breaker bar" that slides along the bar.. it's kinda hard to describe, but when you see it you'll know.

Set that piece of angle iron on the ground, and attach the socket to that breaker bar. Put it on the flywheel nut, and STOMP on the sucker. Worked for 2 flywheels for me.

For what it's worth, here is how I do it, and it works every time.

Turn the engine on the stand with the flywheel down.
Have some one ready to catch it.
Take a heavy hammer, like a machinist hammer or a 2 pound ball pein and strike the flywheel on the thickest area that is next to the gear where the starter engages.
Don't be in a hurry. Strike it and let it set for 4 or 5 seconds. After 4 or 5 strikes, it will fall off in your hands.

The principle is as follows:
The flywheel is on a taper. By striking it with a heavy hammer, you are creating a vibration throughout the whole piece that will seperate it from the taper.

Done it many times without fail.

yeah, we just bought a junk t2 engine that was fucked and we had to get that sumbitchin flywheel off. we had a 3 foot breaker bar with a 2 1/8 inch socket. we had a massive guy stand on the block and we had another massive guy jump on the breaker bar a couple times. worked like a charm...

Heating up the nut with a torch can help too if it's got loc-tite on it.
