I like the old jump on the strong arm trick with some wood wedged under the flywheel. It is usually a ten round battle but I always win. Someday I will invest in that flywheel clamp/bolt on thingy. LOL

 

lololol sorry, ive bent/broken many things getting that nut off. you need like 3-4 people or an air gun

 

I've seen pictures with people trying to take that thing off with a breaker bar and a blow torch and it still breaks the tool! One confirmed way of getting that bitch off is a pneumatic tool of some sort.

 

ya.. its a craftsman and it wasn't even mine. went to sears got a new one and a 3/4 breaker bar. round 2 bent the support bar from my cherry picker as a flywheel stopper. Round 3! used one of the legs from my cherry picker as the flywheel stopper and jumped around like a monkey. I WIN! thanks for the replies.

nah... I was standing on the breaker bar. with my cat-like reflexes I managed to do 25 flips and a couple spins before I landed on my feet.

yeah i tried that whole 10 foot breaker bar deal then i was like, you know what? i can just pick this engine up and put it in my trunk and drive it to my local parts place and they will buzz it off for me and that ladies and gents is prolly the easiest was to do it

 

I am way too stupid to have somebody else do it for me. I have......HAVE to find that 2 1/8 socket. I'll buy the tool use it this one time. Sell the rex and buy something completly different. That Socket will be in the "special" tool drawer just like the VW and bicycle special tools.

 

yea, i think i suggested that method more than a few times.

 

I use the Mazda tool It's a 2 1/8 socket welded right onto a gigantic metal beam, and it comes with a flywheel stopper beam that you can push the opposite direction. Still had to have somone hold the engine while I pulled though.

 

According to the bench book it requires 230lbs of torque to get that SOB off...I doubt that though, as i can easily make 100lbs of torque w/ one arm (using a torque wrench so i'm confident) I'm actually just about to take one off myself, waiting to see what kinda interesting ways my dad can think of to get it off...gotta brace it somehow its alreay out of the car...

 

more like 400 ft lbs. if youre lucky. ive put something like 1000 ft lbs on them before, when they are really stuck tight. just cut it off very carefully with a dremel, or drill the sides of it. works every time.

they have 1" drive air tools.

Well I bought a nice impact at Harbor Freight......That's a conflict in terms. Nice @ harbor freight??? How about cheap at harbor. I am now looking for that 2 1/4" socket to fit. I used the impact on a few other bolts just for fun......and is it nice. My nine year old took off some bolts that were really tough to break with a regular ratchet. We'll see if my 2 1/4 nut gives me hell tomorrow.

 

Three of us got them off with a big socket and massive cheater bar. No air tools needed

 

Heck, I don't even know people at a diesel shop, but I just tossed the engine in the back of my parts hauler Subaru wagon, went to a local diesel shop, and asked if they could break the flywheel nut & front pulley nut free. After a few *really* weird looks at the engine, they put one of their insane air tools on it and zipped both off with no problems at all.

For reference, the easiest method I found to remove the flywheel (after searching here some) was to pry up on one side of the flywheel, and tap the opposite side mounting flange a few times. After cursing at the flywheel for over an hour, this broke it free in 3 taps.

NAPA carries it, my local one had 3 in stock. I have that drawer too - don't need it anymore since I have no rotary anymore.

 

i thought it was 2 1/8. my local auto parts store lets me borrow it every time i need it. which is good since the price on it is 99 bucks.

sears should have the nut. and it is 2 1/8.
