Flywheel
Just a quick question. What size is the nut on the flywheel? Took tranny off on a s4 today and was in amazement.

54mm, their so much fun to remove.
|
yup 2 1/8 or 54mm. I would recommend 54mm because 2 1/8 has a little play and could strip.
|
Now i just have to find a 54mm socket. Carquest

As with all common engine questions, this is answered in the FAQ:
How do I remove the flywheel nut and flywheel? The flywheel nut is torqued to approximately 350 Ft-LBs and is 54MM or 2 1/8" in size. You will need a large breaker bar or impact gun and then some means to keep the flywheel still as the nut is spun off. The flywheel can then be pulled off with a puller or pried off from behind. In addition, this is commonly asked (why it's in the FAQ) so a search on "flywheel nut" would have turned up the many past threads. Most real tool stores will have the 54MM socket. Check the Yellow Pages for an independent tool store or fastener store and give them a call. Generally these sockets are not cheap. |
No need for a puller or wasting time prying. Once the nut is off thread it back on a turn or too and release your aggression with a rubber mallet on the outer ring. They usually pop off pretty quick this way. FYI, the nut is there so the flywheel doesn't become a guillitine.
I know the original poster was just asking about the size but since we're talking about how to get the flywheel off I thought I'd share. |
