Angry flywheel

i'm in the process of rebuilding a 13b t2 (~1990) eng and can't get past a few probs.

i can't get the flywheel off (the flywheel bolt surprisingly came off easy). i've tried prying it, banging it off with a hammer, it just won't budge. i banged the flywheel a few times with the hammer real hard, and i think i may have stuffed the fronst stationary gear bearing as it now makes a noise. is this possible, and could i have stuffed anything else??

also i can't get the front nut off. the nut that holds the oil pump assembly to the ecentric shaft. i've tried extension bars on the end of rachets, hammering rachets, cold chieseling it off... nothing any clues.

i don't have it on an engine stand or any air tools, oxy tourch, big **** impact driver.
any help
FELIX

Okay, believe what I am about to tell you. You probably tried to bang on it with just a regular hammer. That wont work, no matter how hard you hit it. What you need is a heavy 4 or 5 lb hammer, often called a deadblow hammer. It looks like a mini sledgehammer and is available at hardware stores. Now with this hammer give the flywheel a good hard smack on the face of the flywheel, it will come right off (remember to leave the nut on a few threads so that the flywheel doesn't crash to the floor).

I had the same problem as you when I swapped my engine, and I used a regular hammer and I banged on that flywheel as hard as I could, to no avail. I got frustrated and called Mazdatrix to order the flywheel remover and they told me to use a 5 lb hammer. I thought they were full of **** (cause I banged and banged on that thing with the regular hammer), but I went and bought the hammer anyway. I came home and gave it a try, and Eureeka! My flywheel was off. Now it still takes a strong blow to knock the flywheel off even with the heavy hammer, my first blow wasn't hard enough, but my second was. You also might be able to use a sledgehammer if you have one (just choke up on the handle and use a little less force), but I have found so many uses for my new heavy hammer that I am glad I have it.

I can't help you on the front nut though, I have never had to do that.

thanks HEAPS for that!

i'm kinda glad that the solution uses a big *** hammer. just one question though which bit of the flywheel did u hit. u said on the face, wouldn't that hit it more on? did u use wood (i'm not reusing the flywheel)

ok, any other prob from now on will involve the hammer

There are too many things that can't be fixed with a bfh.

Use a mini sledgehammer and it will work. A regular will not work. In my case it was harder to remove the flywheel nut. I had to actually torch the nut before using my impact gun. Then after the persistant nut came off i banged four sides of the flywheel face ind voila!..make sure you dont loose the Eshaft key.

Big hammer... crazy ****!

When i was changin my clutch, the ***** ***** wouldn' t budge either. So i got a torch and heated it up for 5 mins and it came off VERY easily (in fact it dropped onto the ground and destroyed a hoses !!) Be careful that things gotta weight at least 30 lbs.....

can't get the front nut off? the nut holding the main pulley boss on?

Wow, If you can get the flywheel nut off, I can't imagine having problems with the front bolt.. it's ony with around 90 pounds of torque I think, and the flywheel nut is 300....

How I got those things off was : take yer 1/2 inch breaker bar, put a 4 foot lead pipe on the end of it.. pop a crowbar into the end of the 4 foor lead pipe... Standing aprox 5+ feet away from the engine (have friend hold engine down) Sit and or jump on crowbar

Use Bandaids where needed...

oh, on my flywheel, I just hammered it with a regular nail hammer... I hit 3 spots outside of the clutch surface, and hammered it for about 5 mins straight.. Please use earplugs, the ringing SUCKS

good gracious. That bolt is somewhat stubborn. That you can TORCH for 10 minutes and remove with a torque wrench or impact gun. DO this also. Put the flywheel back in and make your own flywheel stopper. This can be done by a piece of 2 to 3 inches of flat 3" flat metal. (Im too lazy to explain how and where to drill the holes). But this will help you stop the flywheel while removing the front bolt. Make sure you have an assistant that will hold the engine down while you're undoing the bolt. If no one is around to help get yourself a impact gun (electric if you dont have a compressor). GOod luck!

my secret to the flywheel bolt was one cold chiesel and one hammer. nut is stuffed, but cost $2 for another one. as u can imagine this is not really possible (effective) with the front nut.

i tried the extension bar process but i lifted the engine plus friend on top of engine.

i'll work on it, otherwise i'll take it to my rotor mechanic with an impact driver
anyhow thanks for all the help!!!
