Help: terrible fuel economy

HELP
I've been getting bad fuel economy ever since I owned my 87 T2.
It has slowly got even worse, 9mpg with relatively sane city driving.
Also, my car struggles to rev past 5500rpm(it always has struggled).
What can it be?
What can i do?

(apparently my compression is 95psi on all 6 compression strokes and i change my plugs regularly)

if it still has the stack exhaust, you might wanna check to see if one of the cats blew out and plugged the other with peices.

Not sure what temps you are running, but you telling me the same symptoms I was having with my RX when I plugged my only cat. About 10 mpg and no power over 3000 rpm. ran hot as hell too!

Check the cats and gut them as necessary (which means all of them on general principle )

O2 sensor could be gone too... doesn't always show up as a code...

Is there a way of checking the Cats without taking the pipes off?
My car does run pretty hot, particularly under the car.
I always thought this was normal.

Also, what kind of fuel usage should I have when my car is fixed?

What economy do other Turbo II owners get ?

If its the stock orig. cats, I would bet thats it too! Yes they do get hot, but this is common if they are orig. units. I don't know of anyway to check without removing them, but again, I bet thats it. Jack up the car when cold & put some anti seize stuff on the nuts & let it set in a while. remove the main cat and take a steel rebar and hammer through, put back on and ZOOM ZOOM again, might smack out the precat while your at it too! Much better response & boost! I get about 16.5 in mostly city driving. Let us know what you find out & good luck!

I'll have a look at my exhaust next week (too busy this week)

Anyone, have any other ideas of what it might be.

Could hot-start flooding be related to a blocked cat?
