"floaty" steering

This is my first post as an FC owner. hopefully you can all help me solve my problems!

so, my car basically jumps around a bit when driving. the steering does not respond wel to small inputs, and the feel? vague. little feedback.

The power steering is removed.

What coudl this be? any specific area to check? the steering wheel seems to have about 3 degrees of play as well.

thank you!

Could you clarify:

The power steering is removed
You put a manual rack in ?
or you just plug the power steering rack (if so, was the steering ok before)

you know, I'm not sure. I just bought the car with no power steering. let me ask the seller.... and if it is a worn out rod, hopefully it's not too big a job.

The power steering was removed, and plugged. I bought the car with power steering removed, so I don't know how it was prior to removal.

Maybe I'll put my FD wheels on it until I finish my rebuild of the 13b-rew. that would show if the tires/wheels themselves are the cause.

I think I just need spacers to do that. The tires are good, and have high grip levels still. the car wanders when driving straight.

The steering is heavy, but manageable.

You need to do the basic checks for tie rod ends and ball joints which are explained in Haynes manual and FSM (see sureshot's sig for FSM).

The FSM gives the allowable steering play, so you can check if yours is ok or not, but again, if the steering components are shot, then it's meaningless.

If the steering components check out fine and the tires are good, then you should really get an alignment done. Again, an alignement is a waste of time if the tie rod ends or the ball joints are loose.
