Flames questions

I've heard all sorts of people mentioning about tailpipe flames, can the car do flames if it's still got the cat on it? or do you have to have a straight exhaust system?

most cats will stop the flames, but I'm sure if you get some real strong flames that don't wanna be told no, they'll get through. I can see a car flaming with old cats, but I agree that the simplest way is with a straight exhaust, and the turbo seems to help since the BOV dumps the air and it's running REAL rich at that point since it was adding enough fuel for boost. Just my $.02 on a topic that's been beat to death

Okay, now doesn't taking the cat off basically make the car completely un-street-legal.

Depends on your states stance on emissions.

Usually..gunning it up to high rpm's in 3rd or 4th gear, then letting it wind down brings some flames.

right after i took out all my emmisions, (ratnest, acv, airpump, alla that), gutted my cats, got me a vented BOV. i can boost on first or any other gear and release gas and let BOV vent and hold gas just a little, i don't see flames but people behind me do, but i can sure hear them. My flames about 12 inches and about half a second.

-mike, gun shot? no just backfire.

Is there any way to stop the flames if you have no cats? Personally I would think that to be a cop magnet.

don't rev high. As it being a cop magnet, don't break any rules, and the cops are helpless - they can't book you for flames (unless you burn the cars behind you ).

half a second huh? try a 1/10th of a second. I have digital video footage of my car shooting flames and they tend to last about 3 frames on analog VHS tape. When playing them on the MiniDV decks its much much cooler cause you see the flames grow from the little 2" start all the way out to 40 inches. They've been messing with our Avid editors so I cant post the pics yet. I'll show you some flames when I can transfer the images.
