flames from exhaust
flames from exhaust
ok if i have straight pipes back with one muffler on the 87 N/A automatic, i keep hearing a few of you saying that i will be shooting fire *****,flames. is this true ? is so isthis jsut a WOT or normal speeds to?
is this dangerous to the engine? harmful to the engine? flame goes away ones you let of throttle right?
please let me know . thanks
also could i use a old N1 style muffler as a presilencer put in place of the stock cat and still run one or two nicer mufflers at the end ? the old N1 style is old and has a 2.5 inside diam like the pipes i put on now. just weld it on it would work. let me know
thanks again

I don't know if an automatic can shoot flames while driving. Flames happen when you hit redline (or close to it) and let off the gas. When you let off, raw fuel goes down the pipes and ignites. So if you are racing, often you will get flames every time you shift. However, an auto might not get the RPM's up high enough before a shift. You can sit in neutral and rev it though for some nice flames.

Sometimes you'll just backfire, other times you may see some flames. Its more likely to happen on a turbo setup. Its just extra gas in the exhaust. Its usually done when you rev really high, let it drop for a bit, then rev really quick again. If you have a BOV (which you dont with an NA) thats vented into the atmosphere, the car compensates for the extra air its supposed to be getting from the BOV into the intake, and makes for more fuel, then your running a bit rich for a little bit, so you have extra fuel in the exhaust, and boom.
i have a 89 n/a vert with racing beat headers,no cats, 2.5pipe to a Y-pipe and 2 apexi 4" mufflers. With the scilencer tips in it sounds pretty good and is low on flame production. With the tips out
car alarms go off and 6" flames are produced. I find that every time i take it to redline at WOT and then let off the gas completly and let the rpms drop about 2k i will get flames everytime. You can learn to avoid them.
