you get flames on an NA the same way as on any 7..just get rid of your cats, that is the key. You could even just gut your cats if you wanted but a straight pipe is better. My 90 GXL has just a straight pipe to a corksport cat back and I get 2 to 4 footers everytime I shift above 6500. They range from small and orange to huge and blue depending on the RPM and the gear I'm leaving. You'll know it when it happens, aside from teh nice BANG sound you'll see all 3 mirrors light up bright blue

does this imply that gas mileage would increase as well?

If you are running rich and tune the af ratio, you may improve gas milage. It all depends on what your af ratio was before and after the tuning.

Want some artificial flames for your exhaust, check out this crazy Japanese website, just click through the links even though you won't be able to read it, there are some cool pics. Here's the site:

my first motor spit flames all the time as soon as I had my downpipe and racepipe made (NA). when that motor let-go (too much + timing, my fault) I put my current motor in and took out the airpump and ACV all together along w/ leaning out my MAF a bit (not recommended w/o an EGT gauge). The leaner mixture no longer backfires after every high rpm shift and I can ONLY flash some bluish flames when I have a constant load on the motor and let off the throttle (4th gear run from say 5K rpm to redline).

Piston engines will throw flames, they're just less likely candidates; the conditions have to be right, timing, a/f etc. Check out a Trans-Am car next time on Speedvision. I remember my friend firing up his Charger with a 440 in it for the first time. He was just starting to tear it down and had the air cannister off. Flames came ripping out the top of the carb. He had nothing from the cast iron headers back to boot, man was it freakishly loud. Still not as loud as our 1.2's and '3's with a straightpipe though.
