QUESTION:flames coming out of exhaust

Hey Guys-

i just wanted to know why the flames shoot out of an rx7 aftermarket exhaust system, and why not out of piston powered cars?

Thanx,
Justin87rx7

Because rx-7's are bad *** like that!!!

Its just they way they are. The unused fuel gets pushed out in the the exhaust system. And becuase rotary exhaust are so hot the light the unused fuel.

With a peripherial style exhaust port, the excess fuel just gets dumped out, well pushed out, into the exhaust by the apex seal. With the Renesis engine, and it's side-port exhaust ports, the unburned fuel gets carried around to be combusted again in the next cycle (that's why it's 32% more fuel efficient). So yeah, peripherial exhaust port means more fuel gets dumped in, and like was said before with a rotary engine's hot (1800 deg.) exhaust temperatures it's easy to ignite.

When porting is done, especially bridgeporting , there are times when fuel gets dumped straight into the exhaust system!

Flaming doesn't hurt the engine, but it looks awesome!

What Bridgeported said. Our cars run **** rich. Not by choice but design. Get a S-AFC your car will run better and you'll rid yourself of those flames. Unless you like roasting already dead roadkill.

I believe if you have a cat it will arrest the flames. Any truth to that?

Cats will tone down the flames. Sometimes all you see is a black puff of smoke. A gutted cat or a mid pipe youll see big flames.

Do a full bridgeport, run the a/f ratio a tad rich, and run a near open exhaust (straight pipe all the way from the turbo except for a 'straight thru design' muffler at the end) and you'll be having trouble not shooting flames

Retard your timing and you have larger and longer lasting flames.

They also look a more blue color instead of orange..

Yes. When the bov goes off it removes air that was measured by the AFM. Causing the motor to run stupid rich for a few seconds. Thats usually why the flames happen when you remove engine load after a hard run through the rpm range.
