First RX-7

Hi Guys,

When I first heard about rotary engines a long time ago I was amazed and wanted one ever since. Well last Friday I finally bought one.

It's a 1987 RX-7, 5 speed, 52k miles, perfect condition.

I'm pretty much a newbie on rotaries except from what I have read on here and other sites but I do know my fair share about cars in general and I want to learn about them so I can do all the work myself.

It's a fun car right now but I want to make some performance mods. What would you guys suggest to do first? I was think new exhaust. Any suggestions on what I should and what parts I should get are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Oh and exhaust is a great place to start, then intake, then maybe porting your intake manifolds if you are capable.

Yeah stage I upgrades are usually:

FULL EXHAUST
- downpipe (replace pre-cat)
- performance main cat
- good 2.5" catback exhaust made for rx-7s (racingbeat, HKS, etc..)

FULL INTAKE
- cold air box (replace OEM airbox)
- headlight cover air intake ( www.mariahmotorsports.com can stamp your OEM headlight cover)
- K&N intake (or similar)
(mariah sells the complete kit - or make one yourself)

Underdrive pullies

Stage II

Ported engine
ECU chip (or aftermarket computer

Pulleys aren't worth the $. Not for the few HP gained. After a full exhaust and an intake WITH A COLD AIR BOX, you should get a S-AFC (fuel computer) and dyno tune. Head for a leaner mix in the mid range of your rpms. Don't mess with bigger injectors or an upgraded fuel pump, or you'll just end up running really rich.

A nice place to start is the suspension. It doesn't do you any good to go fast if you can't stay on the road.

I'm looking at the Racing Beat Downpipe/Presilencer for 86-91 RX-7 Non Turbo. This would replace the cat and everything that i would need back to the Y right? Is there a reason i would need a Cat? We don't get emissions tests in indiana.

Which exhausts would you recommend? I would like to keep it dual exhaust because it looks so much better.

mazdatrix sells a full dual system and Racing Beat sells the header so u can make your own.. im not sure if they offer the pipes and whole system now... RB sells great products and high quality stuff.. i would say stick with them for exhaust..
