Question FCD? Pointless, or Beneficial???!!

ok, i dont know a whole lot about fcd's. but i can get a good deal on one, (40$) i have an 89 turbo swap, full 2.5" turbo back straight pipe, cone filter, no emmisions, no PS and i run Pre-mix. Would a fcd help me for anything? or would it be beneficial to me to buy it? thanks guys

I would think that with those mods you're getting close to the factory fuel cut. It'd probably be best if you got it.

Yeah I have a 2.5 DP, Midpipe and racingbeat catback and I reach fuel cut easy....If your getting fuel cut then thats what the FCD is for.

If you dont want it I need one ill buy it for 40$!!!LOL

well its less a question of beneficial or pointless. it a question of needed or not needed. If you want to hit more than about 8 psi(with you mods and a cold day ill bet you hit it) without a stand alone engine management then you NEED it. IF you want to keep your car mostly stock and dont mind hitting fuel cut everyone once in a while then dont worry about it. You wont see any gains from an fcd it will just keep you from hitting fuel cut so if your not hitting fuel cut yet then your fine but if your modding your car and plan to add anything else besides what you have you will need it.

fuel cut is there for a reason.

I wouldn't add an FCD until I added a better (rewired) fuel pump, bigger injectors, S-AFC, and some dyno time. Then I'd tune with an MBC on my ported wastegate turbo to ~12PSI and make sure that the a/f's are really rich.. If you're not hitting fuel cut then why bother installing it, it can ONLY give you trouble.

you overboost more than what 1 or 2 lbs? i forget...from factory boost levels, and your engine cuts fuel, which can cause nasty things like detonation when it hits.

isn't the fcd just a resistor that goes between the boost sensor and ecu? why dont we just buy some individual resistors(radioshack?) and put the resistors in that wire? it'd be much, much cheaper.

The fuel pump is a definite, but plenty of people have run 10-11psi with just that and the FCD. Mixtures are still okay at that point, but I definitely wouldn't go higher. All steps should be taken to keep intake temps down, as high intake temps lower the threshold of detonation.

All fuel to the rear rotor is cut, so the engine instantly drops to half power. Shouldn't be hard to imaging what that feels like.

No it doesn't. This topic has been discussed at great length before, and many, many people (including me) reported hitting fuel cut repeatedly with no ill-effects. I would suuggest that an engine that dies during fuel cut was on its absolute last legs anyway.

Yeah, I guess my 60,000 mile original engine was on it's last legs...
