FCD and mod's questions...
Hi all.
I had a few questions that I would like to post regarding some modifications that I would like to be doing soon. Okay to start off I have a 1987 TII with 80,xxx miles on it, and it has had a full tune up. The car is pretty much stock, as of now. The mod’s that I hope to get on the car soon are:
-3" cork sport turbo back exhaust
-HKS Air Intake
-FCD
-Boost controller
-And many more mod's after these but mainly towards suspension and handling.
Now on to my first question, I heard when you install the FCD that you need to retard the timing because the ecu wont retard it for the boost its not accounting for, am I right in saying that? If so how much should you retard the timing by?
My second question is what kind(s) of fuel mod’s, if any, should I perform when running this kind of setup? I am hoping to be running around 10 psi with that setup on the factory turbo, then later on I plan to run some kind of hybrid setup.
Any comments on the setup I plan on running would be appreciated. Also my budget right now is around $1,500. I am not looking for insane amounts of power, something along the lines of 200-250hp or so for now. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Do not install a boost controller! Raising the boost is the least of your problems. With a full exhaust and intake you're going to experience boost creep (uncontrolled boost increase) because of the undersized stock wastegate. You will not be able to keep boost below the 10psi that is safe with the stock turbo and intercooler.
To fix this the turbo must be removed and the wastegate ported, preferably with the stock wastegate flap (also tiny) replaced by a bigger one so you can get the wastegate port as big as possible, flow as much as posible, and hence control boost properly.

I also recommend you have your injectors cleaned, and balanced the primaries, and the secondary injectors. Also replace the secondarys with GSL-SE injectors to give you a little more fuel up top once the secondaries kick in. If I were you, do what NZ Convertible says, and port the wastegate. Also do your self a favor, and get rid of the main cat, and install a Racing Beat Downpipe or any other downpipe in your car, and feel the real power of a Turbo Charged Rotary. Also I would recommend as well you go with a FMIC to lower those intake temps. Also for proper lubrication for the whole block feel free to add a small amount., "like a cap full" of Bean Oil to a full tank of gas.
