FC3S FMIC install on a budget with tools you can afford

So I took the dive and went turbo (my name is pointless know). I was looking for good post on doing a FMIC and there were none. Hope this helps some one....

So like all good projects this started with an impluse buy, a $200 intercooler kit on ebay. The one was from CXracing which was way better quality than I every expected. It included pipes, silicon couplers (a little too short) t-clamps, intercooler, and knock off greddy BOV. Later I order two j-pipes for 30 bucks from cxracing. (FYI the pipes welded, and cut fine)

Then after removing the bumper and bumper support, I did a ruff list of the bends need and when to lowes for so pvc pipes and brackets. 30 bucks later I started to fab things up. First I mounted the intercooler by marking the center with a marker, and lining it up with the center of the frame support. I was able to use existing holes for most of the mounts. Then after setting the bumper on a few time I determined the height and using three nylon spacers from Lowes mounted the intercooler.

Then I fabbed up the intercooler pipes in PVC.

Then using this awesome tool I got from sears for $30 bucks I cut my aluminum pipes. This tool cuts like a champ!!! Just tighten the tool on the pipe (not too tight or you bend the pipe) rotate a few times tighten again rotate an poof you are done! I had to make extra cuts bc I could not find a bead roller so I cut the beads from the pipes and had them welded where I needed. (used a roll of blue painters tape during fab process and test fitted 100 times)

Then a quick trip to Wild Side speed shop for some welds. They also put two bungs in for me. One for the nitrous and one to feed boost to my wastegate. It cost $220.14, and was worth every penny! Had to do some clean up but that only took a hour with a dremel, soap and water.

After some bumper trimming, lower IC mounts and more lowes brackets to hold my under skirt in place I was done!!! For 500 buck and a weekend or two and I have a FMIC. Should hit the dyno soon but that will be a different post.

Forgot info

BTW Wide Side Fabrication and Speed Shop is in Battle Creek Michigan, and the two guys that run the place are good people. They mainly do circle track stuff, but you cann't beat there prices or roll cages, or welding. They take care of there customers too, thats why I'm going back for a roll cage this winter.

budget FMIC is always cool, GJ.

The only thing i have problem with as far as FMIC with FCs is that it blocks the main air passage way towards the radiator.

No, but might get a body kit some day. This might sound paraniod but I've sucked a large number of bird into my grill and they all got stopped by the cross bars. I'm like a magnet for suicidal birds.

By next summer when the temps rise enough to need a better flowing cooling system I'll have something better in place. I'm going to duct the radiator but haven't desided on weather to pull from under the car (adds drag/down force) or duct the fog light holes behind the IC to aid with radiator cooling. I've got nitrous to purge through the intercooler also.

The body is a 1991 NA, the rear end is the NA, and it was an open so it probibly not out of a 1986. I blow up a NA limited slip, and needed a rear so I got one out of a old first gen race car that was coverted to 2nd gen rear end. The spider gear were missing teeth and didn't think it would last 20 feet. I've got a few autocrosses on it now and find it to be less of a nussance in daily driving than my friend KAZ.
