fc newbie here..loads of basic mechanical questions :)

First of all, I think this forum is way too cool. I now understand the RX7 better because I've spent some time reading articles and threads from here.

I bought a 90' N/A GTU (I think anyway) a couple of months ago, and now I'd like to give her a little bit extreme makeover. (Low-budget version) Please keep in mind that I'm a car newbie when it comes to the technical stuff - I know the common sense, but just not the detailed techs. Be patient with me

I'll post up some pix later, but here's a rough description of the car's problems:

1. The shift **** wobbles when disengaged and left in neutral. I was told that some kind of "shin" needs to be replaced.

2. Clutch - I can let my left foot off the clutch pedal for about 3/4 and the car won't stall. Bad problem. I was told that the clutch is basically dead.

3. The car sounds like a truck when I drive. Again, I was told that it's only because of the shitty muffler I bought to pass smog. (That thing looks like a tin can..lol) The engine still roars, so I think it's probably the muffler.

4. Throttle response is a little weird - kinda slow. Not consistent to the gas pedal. I thought this might be related to the clutch problem.

5. The car takes about .5 extra second to fire up, meaning when I turn the key to ignite, the car cranks .5 second longer to start up. Spark plug?

And last, but not least:

6. My RX7 badge is not there

Thanks for the help. This forum rocks.

edit: my driver-side mirror is damaged, where do I find OEM rx7 parts?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Don't really want to do stuff with Ebay, though. All the unreliability and scams scare me. Is there some kind of certified (or just generally trusted by most buyers) vendors that would help me out?

*Local motor shop doesn't have the badge wtf lol.

For question 1 all u need is a new shifter bushing kit which you can buy at atkins rotary store online 20 dollar quick fix.
http://www.atkinsrotary.com/store/cu...cat=437&page=1

And also for question number 5 our cars doesn't have compression when its off. it usually takes about 4 to 6 cranks before our cars fire up from cold start; if warm it still takes about 4 to 5 cranks

changing the spark plugs are always a good thing.

what did you mean about the rx7 badge? the emblem in the back?
local pick and pull or check on www.craigslist.org haha

these are some helpful sites

http://www.atkinsrotary.com/
http://www.mazdatrix.com/
http://corksport.com/

look in atkins rotary they have FAQ they are very helpful

As for eBay, it's perfectly safe, as long as you deal with trusted sellers. I bought my '7 on eBay, as well as probably 90% of the car parts I buy. You're protected through eBay and paypal if you get scammed.

For question #4, 7s are notorious for having a 3800 rpm hesitation. check to seeif your 5th an 6th port actuators are working. you might have no idea what im talking about but use the search and try typing 6pt induction, aux ports or 6pi.

Actually, non-working aux ports have little to nothing to do with 3800 RPM hesitation, only a sluggish feeling around the same time, which is very different from "hesitation." What he is describing is much different from the 3800 rpm hesitation anyway.
1 - shifter bushing kit as stated
2 - Is the clutch slipping at all? If not, then its not neccesarily a bad clutch. You can set when the clutch engages, though I can't remember how right now. Check the FSM (available online, link in FAQ) or the Haynes manual (buy one if you don't already have one.)
3 - yep, probably the muffler
4 - Unless its slipping, throttle response has nothing to do with the clutch. There are any number of things that could cause the throttle response problems - clogged cats, dirty air filter, or that could just be what its like one a stock car (never driven one)
5 - Normal for a rotary engine. They always need to crank to build compression.
6 - Either a junkyard, Ebay, or the classifieds on the forum are your best bet.

As stated, Ebay is perfectly fine if you deal with reliable people with good feedback. If you want to pay for a new one, mazdatrix probably has them.

And finally, welcome to the forums!

Wow! Great help. You guys are so much better and different from another forum.

Well, maybe I'll try Ebay

And I guess it's time for me to read some more..well thanks again fellas.

EDIT: If anyone wants some photos here, I can throw some up...she needs some plastic surgery, though.

EDIT2: Ugh, forgot something. Sideway, I guess the clutch does slip at times. What new kit do you suggest? (Not looking for performance kit yet..saving money for engine swap first.)

Well, just generally forums related to my problems (computer stuff, laptop, etc) that either kick me in the face or just close my thread even though I'm sure my questions aren't answered by the stickies..

Yeah I'll do some pix on Saturaday.

Well, a good cost-effective setup is the street/strip disk and pressure plate from Racing Beat. It comes out to around 300 plus tax and shipping. Thats really all you will need for a NA. I actually have the stock disk with an ACT pressure plate and it works great. I guestimate that I had 160 or so to the wheels and abused the hell out of my clutch and it held up fine. The RB unit should be about as good and cheaper, so thats why I recommended it.
