adjust your TPS? and your idler screw at the very top of the engine (covered by a little black cap)

Does the car run smoothly even though it will stall?

Is there any smoke?

Does the engine shake?

Does it start easily?

Does it smell like fuel?

Are there any other symptoms you didn't mention at the beginning of the thread?

You gave very little information on what the problem is, so the replies have been just guesses so far.

the car runs smooth at high rpm's and the motor shakes at low rpms. there isnt any somke but it does smell like fuel. like today i can't even get the car to turn over at all. and it back fires like crazy even during a normal ride. also i have on a safc- 2 but i think all the settings are at zero. i bought the car with it in it. i check on the safc and the low and high thr. were all on zero, on the turbo timer is says that i have around 11v but will that cause the car to not want to stay on? i didn't think so. plz guys more help.

Question: Does the car start back easily if boosted? If so, you're like me with a dead alternator, but that's not the whole problem since I basically have the exact same problem as you, but I run an 86 GXL. You might have clogged injectors (may cause stiffling, so the throttle adds more air) and/or vaccum leak. I'm still trying to fully sort out my problem but I think we should stay in touch; see if we can figure this out together.

Is the car overheating? That could be a problem as well, right?

it sounds like a vac leak when you say it shakes at idle and smooth at high rpms and the fact that it smells like gas makes me think it may be a fuel problem, obviously. check the vac line on your fpr and injector bleeds. the symptoms may be un related, in which case i would just check all vac lines and then tune the safc. either way, checking vac lines wont hurt at all.

thanks well uhhh. but will the vac lines cause the car not wanting to crank nor turn over. i crank it earlier but then i took off my foot from the gas pedal and then it die like usual but then i cant start then car anymore you'll hear a wierd little noise and thats it. could it be the starter thats causing it not to turn over?

also btw the car back fires like crazy while i'm tryiing to keep the car from stalling. someone said it could be the comp. and others said that it could be the seals.

Compression would be the seals (internal engine seal damaged and leaking). There's another thread like this right now. Same advice goes...check compression before spending time/money anywhere else, then go from there. GL.

i havent been driving it but it back fires when i did drive it at low speed ups. i'm new to the car so i dont really know how i can tell if theres a vac leak. damn i wish i had someone here to look at it. urghhhhhhhh.

thanks for all the info guys......keep them coming

could bad plugs cause the car from not wanting to stay running?
and that thing i dont know whats its call but it on the side/back of the intake manifold is it called the idle air control valve?could cause this too?

Have you checked the compression? Check that and THEN come back.

Check the compression, and then get back to us.

There could be many causes but the compression test is the easiest place to start.

See instructions here:

thanks ya i'll check the comp on the motor. but this maybe a noob ? but now i have the car running but the idle is at 2000 rpms, after i replace the plugs that is. yea btw will low comp cause the car from not wanting to idle and stay on? and plus it smells like fuel alot whenever i drive it or crank it for a warm up. i think i have a vac leak too but dont noe where all the vac lines are at. i'm a newbie.

well the started doesnt click but it makes a weird noise, and the other day i try to jump start it but it wont start i heard a little clicking noise while i was charging the battery. anybody know what that noise could be? i was gonna spray carb cleaner on the vac lines to check for a vac leak but i cant start it now, damn it.
