FC heading to scrap yard, Should I save it?
A buddy of mine gave me a call a few weeks ago asking if I wanted any parts off of an FC that someone had dropped off. It had a minor front end accident, the car got repo'd and now the guy is going to scrap it. Here is the reason I want to save it. The entire car is there, and original. He is asking what he would get for scrap money and will even tow it to me. $300 for a complete stock FC. Forgot to mention it has 101k miles, and I have a replacement red hood for it as well.
Now, I did a compression test today and the results werent too good. I was told the car had been overheated so I hoped for the best, and well the best wasnt too good...
The rear rotor either has a stuck apex seal or it spit it out. Low readings on two faces and a decent pulse on the last. The front I got roughly 80 PSI across all three faces. It wouldnt start on its own which was a bit sad. I think the apex springs have been flattened and it isnt building enough compression.
SO! Is it worth parting the car out? Should I do a super basic rebuilt and flip it? Should I let him crush it? I hate to see good usable parts go to waste. It's not like they are making any more of them. I dont NEED to buy the car, but it would help recoup some costs of the rebuild on my car if I can flip it for a profit.

If it's an N/A it can rebuild for under $1000, even under $500 if your research your parts and re-use as much as possible.
Or, you can buy it and part it out over the forums. Lots of usable parts on there still. You'll make double your money, at least. I got dibs on some things if you do

FLIP IT!! Save the car! Near ~100K cars are getting rare and rarer.... I bought one ~6mo ago that has 99K on it that was going to be scrapped, I'm still sitting on it [because it has no title..] but hey! Worth it to save the car! XD
I totally would. I blew my first FC and had two others lying for parts. Kicking myself now for sending them to the scrap 2 years ago. Now I have another FC that RUNS... and I wished I still had them.

Wow that was more positive than I thought it would of turned out. I was expecting more along the lines of "NAH FCs ARE JUNK. ITS ONLY A BASE MODEL 4 LUG LET IT GO ITS A PIECE OF CRAP" I will find out how much my local rotary shop is asking for a super base rebuild. I'm good friends so I'm hoping to get a decent price...If not It'll get parted or head your way Antman. But only if you tell me what your plans are for it

I wish I had a 4-lug. Many old school style rims only come in 4-lug. But I'm keeping my stock T2 wheels, so I guess it really doesn't matter.
In the end, a rotary powered vehicle is a rare car and shouldn't be wasted.

If $300-500 is worth numerous hours of work (transporting it, parting it/fixing it, shipping things, haggling with people, dealing with the forum, etc.) then go for it. I personally wouldn't bother with an N/A 4 lug. You'd probably be better served by snagging anything semi-valuable and letting it go (e.g. switches).
If you don't have an rx7 or need a parts car , buying a car like this would be ideal.
If you're trying to flip your money and get some profit its not likely to happen with an NA, and if it did it would take quite some time and effort-even Turbo parts are hard to sell unless someone really needs them, most people are cheap.

As long as the car isn't a rust bucket, for $300 bucks and a tow, say "**** the engine," junk the original engine and get a used one for $600-ish bucks, and you are still winning. Or, you can get a rebuild, in which you're still pretty much in good shape.

The car is pretty clean. minus the clearcoat peeling and the front end damage. The previous owner said he has another red hood to go with it so I just need to figure out how ot get the bumper support straight. The low compression leads me to believe it was overheated so it would be great if I could get away with just a seal kit and not having to purchase big pieces..
I was bought an 86 that's been sitting for ten years from the owner who bought it in 86! I'm taking that on and I already have one! They are almost always worth saving! Little body DMG is nothing and rebuilding the engine is fun.

Well crappy news. Apparently the car was "scrapped" a month ago as in the paperwork was done. The guy was holding onto it for a friend to get parts off of. I was speaking to said friend and apparently he was never told that the car was already sold for scrap...so I'm gonna take the interior for myself and any little sensors in the engine bay, maybe grab the engine and stick my mock up engine in there since the parts are technically no good.
