I've read that the TII doesn't handle as good as the n/a's. Why is that? and if so, can it be made to handle equally for cheap?

its heavier....i dont know about cheap but it can be made to handle with the best of them.

The Turbo II and n/a are practically the same car, it might weigh 30 - 50 lbs more, but it's still faster and that weight isn't going to have any real effect on the cars ability to handle on the street or track for that matter...

Which NA? I think an open diff and the LSD makes a big difference in handling. Of course, all TII's had LSD's.

 

The N/As are typically slightly better balanced than the T2, but unless you drove one against the other you would hardly notice any difference. Of course most T2 owners would claim their cars were no different or better.

Remember the S4 T2 already has the heavy duty suspension of the 86-87 Sport, and 88 GTU, while the S5 is the same as any other coupe.

And Brian is wrong about the weights... the T2 on average weighed about 150-200lbs more than a compairable coupe. The 10th AE (for example) was within 40 lbs of the 'vert. That means that the difference is about the weight of a adult male in the passengers seat. Most people can feel a handling and power difference between having a passenger and not having one.

 

Something else to consider when comparing the two cars to each other. They are both atleast 12 years old. The suspensions are going to be in different provided they are both still stock. When you mod them they will be closer to each other. But the biggest deciding factor on how the car handles is the driver that is controlling it.

 

Icemark: What's a vert weigh? My car is 2890lb with a full tank of gas, so about 2800 dry. That's bone stock, +15 years of road crap attached to the bottom of it

 

My 88 'vert with a T2 engine and drive train, with no real weight reduction; weighs 2920 wet (3/4 of a tank) according to the local scale. Figure about 5-6lb per gallon in gas.

But 88 and 89 non P package equipped 'verts weighed stock about 2860 on arrival to the port according to a couple of the the window stickers people have posted here. P package verts jumped up to 2980 (leather, cruise, tilt wheel, upgraded CPU, auto tranny, etc).

But they got really fat in 90-91, with a US spec 'vert weighing over 3045 for manual tranny versions and 3105 for automatics.
