actully i went to a used car lot to test drive a pontiac sunbird as my first car (i was 16), after that car sucked *** the guy offered me an rx7 he had in an auction somewhere, and if it didnt sell in the auction i could have it for 1000. 5 seconds later he got a call saying it didnt sell. i had no idea what rx7's were, but he brought it over the next day and i drove it.

love at first shift

I don't like FDs. Thier body style to me just looks too "import tuner" aka "ricey" to me, plus not that reliable.
I grew up in the 80s, so the cars that I was introduced to in the first part of my life are from that era... and I took a liking to the 80s import sport compact cars... like the old supra, crx, mr2, etc...
So in my search to buy a car for myself, I starting looking at these... seeing what I would want to buy for my first car once I got some money. Some years went by, and my search narrowed to RX-7s... 1st and 2nd gens.
Now until then the vehicle I drove around was an automatic 86 gmc suburban, leaked about a quart of oil a week, and got 4miles to the gallon... was the only vehicle my parents would let me use of their 3...
Finally moved out, and started looking for my car again, then i found one... an 88 auto gxl, canceled my life insurance and took that money and bought the car.
Loved it, learned alot about rotaries, then the time came for me to start doing some performance mods... so i was looking to an auto to manual TII swap, but it wasn't in my power to be able to really do it since I used the 88 as my DD...
Lo and behold... there was an 1gen for sale for cheap, looked bad, but the drivetrain was nice... so I convinced my GF (whom I live with) to buy it... and now thats her DD :p
Later I found my current car...
FCs are also cheap to start out with, but once ya get into them they can be just expensive as an FD... that is if you don't go cheap and buy the real parts for the car... cheap parts kill reliability.
So there ya have it, since i knew what cars were I basically wanted an 80s import car, I like how they look... if I was to get anything but a 7 it would be an MR2, but I like the community here, so I am going to keep with my 1st and 2nd gens

I like Initial D, too, but that was not really in the deciding factor of 'what to get'

I required a rear wheel drive sports car. No fancy traction control, no spiffy stability control, no gazoogles or whazzits. Just a fun car that won't break the bank. I also needed a bit of an aftermarket following for parts, upgrades, and such, so uniqueness like the Stareon was out the door immediately.

After visiting my college's local autocross events and getting to drive such big names as a 300ZX, 240SX, and seeing many other cars perform (OMG THAT'S A 5.0L FORD LTD... and it has better time than my Honda!), i thought the 300Z was a great car. Lotsa power, kinda heavy but overall nice... Then let's just say that i was taken for a ride in a '88 Rex.

Been drooling over them ever since. I would really like to get an FD for the added power, stiffness, and overall porsche-ness look, but for the amount i would pay to _get into_ the fd market, i can have an already _mostly finished_ fc project. So that's where i stand

FD was never a realistic option for me, I needed something a bit more affordable. I just wanted a turbo, rear wheel drive, good handling, and something that wouldn't scream "steal me!"....the TII caught my eye. I'd love to have an FD, but I figure the FC is a good learning car for my first rotary. Heck, there's alot of cars I'd love to have.

It's a little of all the choices for me. I dig FD's (but can't afford one), Initial D, and the 80's JP Sportscars. (And I love the flip up headlights.)

Basically I looked at my needs vs wants for a new car and my target was actually a mid 90's MX-6 or similar car... but I always wanted something more sporty like a FC, MR2, or 240. The more research I did into the FC, the more I had to have one. I figured there had to be a good reason why thousands of people have a fanatical following for an engine with some funny shaped triangles instead of pistons. And now I'm starting to see why.

And so what if my car was made when I was in kindergarden?

Edit: Let me rephrase that... And so what if I was in kindergarden when my car was made?

The first time i rode in an FC I was about 6. It was my uncle's (87gxl I think), of course I didnt know **** about cars back then, but I thought it was pretty cool. A few years later that same uncle sold his FC and bought a CYM FD, and after that i knew i had to have an rx7.

When turned 16 and it came time for me to buy a car I set myself up with two options 1. Finance an FD or an E36 M3 2. Buy a Cheap beater and have an FC on the side. Turns out I went with option 2. I was just looking through cheap car dealerships one day and I stumbled upon a blue AE86 gt-s corolla for $800. Needless to say I went back the next day and bought it. About about 5 months later I found an incredibly clean '90 t-II for sale and I swooped it up.

I could have bought an FD years ago, but I've always envisioned the FCs as "RX-7s". The first RX-7 I ever saw was a 90 TII (red with black leather) as a kid when my Dad was working as a mechanic for Mazda. I wanted one as my first car, but I ended up getting a 93 B2000 (the real Mazda ones).

I ended up getting an FC because of sentimental reasons and encouragement from my Dad who knew that it was an affordable and fun sports car. He likes the FBs because of their lighter weight (especially a GSL-SE he built-up for one of the shop managers).

I'd love to have an FD if I had tons of money to burn, but I'd keep my FC too. I like the FD body design, because it is more timeless than the FCs. Overall the FC is a better hobby car for me than an FD, and it has more sentimental value.

Either way, I've never driven anything that handles like an RX-7, and that's what I enjoy the most. I can always find ways to up the raw power, but making a poorly handling car handle well just seems like a waste of money to me.

I wanted an FC ever since i was in high school (6 years ago). I was looking to buy my first car, and wanted a cheap, sporty, rwd car. Some of the cars i was looking into were the 90's Supra, 280zx, early 90's mustang, and the 2nd gen RX-7. At first i didnt like the RX-7 because of the rotary engine, and i wasnt sure if i would be able to work on it.

Then one day i decided to find out a little more about how rotary engines worked, and came across the article on howstuffworks.com. I thought, wow that is badass.. only 3 moving parts..its so simple.. and lightweight. From then on I was hooked. I never really considered getting an FD, they were my first choice if money was no option, but they are too expensive, especially for a 10+ year old car, imo. If i got an FC, i wouldnt have to worry about babying it, and i could drive it hard without much thought as to how much it would cost to fix.

I didnt really have any money back then, and my parents sure werent going to buy me one, so i just did a lot of reading about them on the forums and stuff until I had money to get one. I initially wanted a n/a, because i heard the turbo II's were less reliable, and i needed it for a daily driver. Skip ahead to last year, and i finally bought one, a really clean 1990 GXL.

Now i want a Turbo II

I got my AE on a repo bid with 16K miles in 1990. I researched mid eighties Porsche coupes but they couldn't compare in performance, comfort and quality. Besides I wanted to go rotary just for the tech challange. We'll, plenty of challange.
I'm pulling the engine this fall and will rebuild with street port, hybrid turbo, Rtek w/S AFC for fuel trim and air to water IC. No regrets on this car. Fun to drive and I just can't keep my foot off the gas. I love that whine! Plus a great performance platform. Handling is superior, styling is superb and the engine tweaking is endless. You gatta love this machine.
I checked out the FD while at the dealer and thought it was indeed a better car. Just never got finished with this one. If I was to do it again it would be a FD or back to the 911's.

I'm from Way Old School. I'v owned a '68 Ranchero 302, '69 Road Runner 383, '70 Cutlass 350 Rocket, & '70 GTX 440. They ran, most of the time. One day, the american icon I happened to own at the time was'nt running. I needed parts and a ride. I asked my mom for a ride to the parts store and said she was to busy. I begged till she let me take my stepfathers brand new 86 RX7 as long as he never found out. I baby'd most the way, but couldn't resist testing it. I got on it a stop light and almost had a heart attack when Isaw the tach. I had thought I over revved it. I was'nt used to engines feeling so smooth over 5000!
