Broken apex seal? Or somethin' else?
Alright, here's my problem.
First off, I've a 1986 GXL RX-7 n/a motor. When the engine messed up, it was at 102,000+ miles. I bought it with 99,727 miles on it.
After I drove home after the Labor Day weekend, I took off from a stop (peeling out), and shifted into 2nd then 3rd with no problem. Then my torque went down, warning lights went off like crazy and my engine died. I started it up again, and I found out my transmission shook like crazy. BUT, I was able to shift with NO problem (aside from the vibration - the whole tranmission housing).
I got it home safely (driving it at 10mph), did a hearing check on where the clanging noise was coming from. Sounded like it was from the engine housing itself. Plus, the exhaust was "popping". After reading the manual, maybe it was the spark plug timing causing the popping. BUT, that still didn't explain the clanging noise from within the engine. Could it be a broken apex seal? Plus, when I just let it sit there to idle, it just dies shaking.
Sounds like an apex seal? I'm tryin' to find out my options to fix it. Take it to a shop, send apex seals to my Dad to fix it (he doesn't know sh*t about Rotaries - but he has worked on other engines), or get another engine from a junkyard?
Oh, and it's in Central Coast California. Near San Jose and Monterey.
Any thoughts would help.

check your motor mounts....maybe it could be as simple as that. Possibly the popping could be from bent/cracked exhaust? And take out your trailing plugs and crank the motor over with egi fuse removed. You should hear 3 even wooshes, if not then it is definatly an internal seal. (one plug per rotor at a time)

Sounds like a blown apex seal to me. Do a "blown seal test" (poor man's compression test) to confirm it. Disable the injectors (pull the EGI fuse), pull both upper or lower spark plugs (doesn't really matter), and crank the engine. You should hear even "chuff-chuff-chuff" sounds, two per crankshaft revolution. If you only hear one rotor making noise, or "chuff-chuff-pause-chuff-pause-chuff" you have a blown apex seal.
They're not bad to rebuild.
