what do you mean "snap off"? is it very pressurized or something? will there be a bit of oil spraying?

The 20 year old plastic is very brittle, so it will break very easily. There's no pressure in the system, with the engine off.

update


replaced both water pump housing gaskets as well as the water pump and there is still a coolant leak the same as before.. suggestions?
