Unhappy Failed smog-intermittant smoke

1988 na

Hi, This is my last post here until I find another Rx7. Mine has an intermittant oil smoke problem that happens once or twice a month. It just did it when the test only smog guy was pulling it in for the biannual smog check, failed miserably on several of the test checks. HC and Nox on low speed and just Nox on high speed. The CO were both OK. Can't afford the money or time right now to do anything with it so I'm selling to the state for $1000.
Question is what could have caused the intermittant oil smoke? It comes on and if you rev the engine a little it stops almost immediately. It doesn't use that much oil, about 1 qt/1000 mi, unless I'm really getting on it a lot.
Thanks for any info.

Bad oil seals. You can run it for a while like that, but it'd be a good idea to rebuild the engine or get a remanufactured one as it's reducing the life of your engine and cats. Both options are expensive. You can just replace the oil seals, but most people here would tell you to rebuild the whole engine while you have it apart and out of the car, which is good advice.

How bad is it smoking? Does is just do it when you start up? Is it worse before or after 4k rpm?
