I am totally pissed right now ..the car spit out 5 times the allowable on readings for the emissions ..and I did everything right ..so lookin for a solution ..no I am not goin PISSED-in power..I am staying rotary ..suggestions or a fix or an engine in the OTTAWA /Toronto(ontario,canada) area..any replys appreciated .tahnks ..at least i got my "other" car ..all's not lost... DAVE.

 

ok well here is one thing that car is almost 20 years old and things tend to fail. i dont know how it is up there in canada. do you have to get an emissions test or do you do it volinteraly. if you do it on your own free will then why bother.

 

look for some poeple that can "get you to pass emissions" if you know what i mean.

every 2 years ..manitory in Canada.. until the car is 20 ..after that it is exempt..duh..i had to buy a newer car ..am i dumb or what(heh,heh)..seriously..after posting i tapped on my supposed cat..and it does not SOUND right..I'm droppin the exhaust at the cat..I'll post the findings tomorrow on the same thread..,....by the way I DID use the alcohol trick..i might ..if i have to make a bracket at the old power steering location throw a seperate air pump ther and run it alone right to the cat...IF I have to..more to follow ..misterstyx69

 

dont use alcohol, pay somebody off if you can. i was having similar emissions readings on my '87 tii (1000, 1200 ppm HC) and the way that i fixed my problem was as follows:
remove front monolith pre-cat and replace with downpipe (i welded my own from scrap pipe, cost me nothing) remove one mid cat (non turbo) or replace the central cat (turbo) with a new hi flow cat from napa or wherever. then, pull your air pump out, and use a rubber mallet to turn the positive airflow nozzle around. attach the airpump directly to your clean new cat with a piece of heater hose (larger diameter for the airpump, with a smaller diameter hose stuffed into it to make a fitting that will attach to the air inlet on your cat)

pass your emissions test.

i got my emissions down to like 90 ppm HC and like 1% CO.

running your cat with the airpump connected directly will decrease overall cat life, but you should still get like 50k mi out of it.
- or you can do what i did, and weld the cat in as a segment, with a straight piece to replace it with after each emissions test.

 

you sayin hook the air pump so it sucks air from the cat?..G-zuss h kryste..(sorry) why would i want to pump exhaust back in my N/a?..I'm going with heater hose from the pump directly to the cat..dillute the exhaust non re-use it..i don't care about cat life if i can't pass NOW....not to be harsh man ..I'm gonna see what the cat looks like first..(sounds hollow) no idea what previous owner may have put on for a "CAT"....and as i said i'll post the findings on this thread or a new one if I PASS!.

this is j-rats recipie for passing emissions *in the FAQ*

1. Turn variable resistor to full lean, or as lean as you can get and still run.
2. Trick ACV into pumping air to the cat all the time by removing the FORWARD UPPER vac hose, and capping it.
3. Run 87 octane
4. Run your tank down till your almost empty.
5. 2-3 bottles of alcohol in the tank. Drive VERY GINGERLY to the emissions station.
6. Once you pass go, DIRECTLY to a gas station and fill up with regular unleaded.

 

wait....theres a difference in regular and 87 octane? Regular unleaded around here (TN area) is 87-89 depending where you stop....and at 2.18 a gallon now

 

regular is usually 87.. I think.. In florida its 87..

87 will give you lower readings versus 93?

posted as a follow up and to let you guys know that an ACTUAL catalytic on the car doeshelp!!. .the previous owner had failed the test with the car too..and upon investigating why ,I myself had failed,I found out that one of the previous owners had actually gutted the cat!..so it was just there for show!..so I was able to solve that...car is up for the winter now ..it's a spring thing ..who knows ..I may just start another project(oh no!)..lol..Thanks for the help guys!

 

WHere is the forward upper vac hose? Can anyone get me a picture
