factory security system question
hey guys,
have a 1990 convert and have a question about the factory security system. Unfortunately i didn't get the owners manual with the car when i bought it. Basically my question is how exactly do you control it? I have figured out that turning the key in the door will shut it off once its triggered. But is it possible to turn it off entirely? Can removing a fuse disable the system and not affect other things associated with it (i.e. lights/horn/starting).
I had remote locks/starter installed and it seems the security system will go off randomly, or perhaps its not random, i just don't know how to control when or if it will go off, or how exactly to set it. I don't really need it to function, so turning it off is an option.
Thanks for any help.

Random alarm arming
If you lock both doors with your remote, you can arm your factory alarm by simply opening and closing your trunk lid. This is probably your "random" situation.
Personally, I like that idea. I have an aftermarket alarm that locks both doors when I arm it. If I'm not liking where I'm leaving my car, I arm the factory by opening and closing the trunk. Thus, if they disarm my aftermarket alarm, they will trigger my factory alarm. My alarm has an alarm.

I just went through this drill to fix...
There is a process in the Factory Manual that is very helpful in tracing down. Go to one of the sites that has the Factory Manual online. It's on page T91-94 in my '91 manual.
If you pull the remote trunk release and the alarm light flash's once, then your alarm is working fine and your trunk isn't the problem.
Now, if you open the hood and it flash's, then it's not the hood switch. The hood switch was my particular problem. Fixed it, now everything works fine.
Basically, if your alarm see's a ground from any source, it won't arm. When you open the trunk, the related switch gives a ground. Same for the hood. Same for both door lock switch's. My guess, one of those switch's is grounding no matter what. Figure out which and repair, you should be good to go.

Also, it has been a while, but I am sure you have to lock the door from the inside, then hold the door handle up, close the door, then release the handle to arm the alarm.
