lets start with what the problem is. Does it STICK when you try to open it? Does it do the first part, and then grind at the second part? does it do NOTHING?

sometimes my sunroof doesn't want to close, i start to close it, gets about 1/2 way closed, then stops, i have to push it up gently while i press the button, i'm also interested in the correct way of cleaning the sunroof mechanism and lubing it myself.

any good input from u guys is highly apreciated.

No, it's not normal. It's supposed to open to vent position and then you need to press the button again to open it all the way. However, when closing, it should close at once.... at least mine does.

It's very very common for FC sunroofs to need a little tap to open at first. It's been necessary on every FC I've been in w/ a factory sunroof. It's not because anything is dirty (to my knowledge) but I suppose whatever mechanism lifts the roof is old/worn and not working. However, if the roof opens closes smoothy after a little boost then don't worry about it. Chalk it up to one of the quirks of these cars - IMHO it's not worth fixing since the sunroof is a PITA to work on and expensive.

Too bad, I was hoping that there would be some useful information on how to fix this problem!

Amazing that there are those that think that manually pushing on an electric sunroof is a normal procedure!

BTW, mine works but it has to be smoother then it is...

If the little tap required to open your sunroof is the largest of your troubles, consider yourself a very fortunate man.

yeah mine did the same thing and it annoyed the hell out of me. when i took it apart i looked in the FSM and it said there were "shims" toward the rear, which mine didnt have. i posted a few times about this and everyone else said "what shims?" so... i built up the rear with a little pit of double sided tape and now i dont need to tap it while opening it if the car is moving and air is hitting it. but at a stand still i do.

i think the problem is there are 2 things that lock it into place when it is down, when you open it these little hooks press up in the rear of the panel. on mine you can see on the panel where they hit. it you grease that spot up it works fine until it is no longer greased up.

i think the problem is that rear of the panel needs to be slightly higher... building it up with double sided tape only works for a while cause it compresses and stays that way after a while... if i could only find those shims...

What shims? seriously, where are they located, I want to check mine to see if they are there. Depending on what they look like they shouldn't be hard to copy.

The hooks you mention, are these the black plastic crescent shaped channels that are on each side near the rear of the roof? I believe that these serve to latch/lock the roof down so that it is secure and somewhat difficult to pry up, you know for those nice people that want to help themselves to your stuff!

My sunroof needed the tap for it to open. It really got on my nerves, so I cleaned it out real good and put new grease on the rails. So the results were: I now no longer need to tap it to open, but it no longer slides back on one side. Wish I had never worked on it...

there are pics of the shim in the FSM and it says "shim"... they are supposed to be on the back of the bracket that touches the panel. and yes those are the hooks i mentioned. on my panel you can see where they hit. if i lube that part of the panel up the roof opens fine till the grease wears off.

I know that the hooks on mine are not greased, in fact I just replaced the metal panel with a glass one so I'm sure of it. I'm also a little surprised that the even contact the panel at all, I would have thought that would only make matters worse.

As for the shims, I wonder if the washer like pieces that are held onto the metal brakets is what they are referring to?

they dont look like washers to me, but there should be one in the back and one in the front on both sides. i didnt see anything that looked similar when i had my panel off.

and for anyone who wants to see its the last pic on page 14-57 in the FSM.
