Extreme Vibration

I get a pretty strong vibration at 5000-redline, doesnt matter if its in gear or neutral (though its worse in gear, up to speed) I can feel it through the entire car and steering wheel. I cant quite tell if its in the trans/clutch or if its engine related (hope not)... Is it more likely engine or tranny? Or anyway to help narrow down the problem? Could it maybe be the driveshaft? It has me worried because I wasnt going to touch anything internal until it goes, not looking forward to searching for the problem and spending $

BTW, its an 87' TII

That might be it then. i wasnt sure if mounts would really cause that, but now that youve said that, anytime i rev i can see my shifter lean side to side by as much as an inch or two. so it might be the mounts. guess i can do a test to see and make sure. if thats all it is ill be happy, cause they will be getting new mounts down the road anyway

They will have to stay shitty for a little while longer as Im not ready to relace any of the mounts yet. They will all be replaced when I get a full bushing kit

sounds like u-joing failure does the vibration worsen with speed or is it only at high rpm?

well it does get worse at higher speeds but i was lamost sure that it was out of round tires. but again, now that it was brought up by someone else i guess it could be u joint. ugh, DAMN YOU MONEY PIT RX7!!! Guess while im fixing whatever in the hell is wrong with it, ill go ahead and take the time to do flywheel and clutch... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

None of that stuff requires taking the engien and tranny apart, except the flywheel. The driveshaft is easily replaced from under the car, and so are the tranny mounts. The engine mounts just need an engine hoist to lift up the engine.
Edit: here's a link to some of the problems: http://mazdatrix.com/g2.htm Look towards the bottom of the page.
None of those things are that expensive to replace, especially with used parts if applicable, so don't worry too much. You can get a used driveshaft for not too much at a junkyard if thats the problem.

Well if your worried about the u-joint they're really easy to check. Just get your car up off the ground and crawl under it. (I'm assuming like most RX-7's in the universe it's impossible to get under it without lifting it )
Grab both sides of the u-joint, just to the front of it and just behind it. And try and rotate them different directions. You shouldn't be able to get any play. Unless it really gone you proly won't even be able to see the twist, but you should feel the slight *clunk* as they twist opposite directions. Any play in the u-joint at all that you can feel and it should be replaced.

Yeah i know you dont have to remove tranny or engine. Its something thats in the cars near future anyway, so while im working in that area, might as well go ahead and drop the tranny too and fix all of that. Probably go with that aluminum driveshaft on mazdatrix. Rear end will need a rebuild down the road also, but its not bad enough to make me wanna rip it out of there too. The lsd still works but is a bit aged feeling
