1986 N/A
Fairly fresh rebuild, no other issues up to now.
The car starts and runs great, but as it idles i can touch/move the trailing coils and it seems as if they stop working. Pull my error codes and it say trailing coil failure. But i turn the car off and start it right back up and fine. This is while it is cold. Coils are not hot. Decided maybe it will be fine as long as i dont touch it. Eerrrrt! I hit any kind of bump or vibration it fails. Checked wireing, cleaned all grounds, changed plugs, tried other coil packs but they all seem to not work. Ive searched and tried using a multimeder to read it. All is good. Im stumped. Do not want to result in buying new coils for 200 and it still not work. Need some positive feed back please.

why does it not work if you touch it? or if it doesn't work when you touch it, isn't that the part that is bad?
the other thing maybe to check is the wiring's continuity to the ecu

Check continuity....... and ur questions is same ones I'm asking. Lmao. Why are the coils good until disrupted?! Is the coils bad? According to tests I've done and someone it checks out good. Plz someone with experience help!

I had this same problem, intermittently when the car was cold as well. But I swapped the coil and haven't had any more problems with it so far.
I would test the signal coming from the ecu to the coil harness. As per FSM.

I have and ofcourse they are all good until I touch or bump/disrupt the coil pack. My bro just bought a fairly decent base model that runs. No title and not seeing any action for awile so he gave me the coils of it. Find out tommorrow. Any more suggestions plz reply
You shouldn't be able to move the coil packs at all. They should be bolted down tight, maybe that's your issue seeing as they ground through the pedestal they sit on. Is the pedestal loose?
And the winner is...................TEXFCTURBOII.
Lead and Trail coil assy MUST be solidly bolted to the chassis for them to work. The gnd for the electronics inside the ignitor assys is via the chassis of the assy mating well with the chassis of the car.
The OUTBOARD fastener of the Trail coil is NOT a gnd point. It takes the other two inbd nuts/fasteners to make the circuit. The outboard one has a rubber shock on it that seemingly has a problem passing electrical current.

Gahd.... lol I'm not a dumbasses. Sorry for not clarifying it is bolted down properly and I removed all the mountains to clean to make sure it has a good ground.
Any who. My bro bought a running 88 for 300. No title. Using it as parts car. He gave me the trailing side coil and low.and behold my car runs. It was just bad coils. Don't understand...... but any weird signs of what I had going on is deffently a bad coil pack.
